Is there any need for this with our motors? Or are they fine without it...

All depends on conditions. Low snow & icy there is a good chance, but in decent conditions you'll be fine.

I often overheat riding plowed roads. The bigger concern though, is ice buildup on the rear of the tunnel. There is major ice buildup that occurs where damage occurs to the Snow Flap Bracket.
I added one to my machine. The installation is a little tricky, too.
There is a guy selling them on ebay. That is where I bought mine last year.
AVOID HIM AS HE CHARGES TOO MUCH!
Pioneer Performance offers them at about 50% of "Mr. Ebay's" price.
"Mr. Ebay" claimed to me in an email that he had them made, but it is obvious that he did not. He only anodizes them in different colors and then adds 50% to the price. Pioneer confirms this by selling the exact same unit and explicity stating that it is a Yamaha Kit.

I had one installed this year while my sled was in for a preseason. Went to pick it up, yes the exchanger was there, but no it was not on the slip. Moral of the story, I got the exchanger for free!

I rode in some pretty bad conditions last year with the Rage, 40* temps and zig zigging on the trail to stay in snow and out of the mud and never had a temperature problem.

Never had an issue where it got anywhere near hot.

Never overheated. No concerns. Some RX1' s had issues but I guess it would not hurt if you wanted to add one.
