Rear Rack Storage Ideas

I couldn't find a box to fit my needs so I slowly (all winter) built one out of scrap aluminum. It can snugly hold my ice auger, axe and 2 amo boxes full of stuff. I don't carry the auger often so lots of room for back pack, food, coffee or whatever. Everything has a place and is secured. Not finished yet as I have all summer to add too it and paint. It will be permanently mounted. Wired inside with a LED light, 12 volt plug in and maybe cigaret lighter.
Lots of work planning this box but worth it! Cost me so far about $30....
Finished product. And added a Pintel hitch plus work light on back and in box.

I finally got around to finishing the mounting for the Plano #1619 on the VL. Ended up using some 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" exterior vinyl moulding from a local Menards store http://www.menards.com/main/doors-w...m?tid=6175613005784896106&bargainStoreId=3269

1-1/2" x 1-1/2" Vinyl trim (cut into: 3 pcs@16-1/2", 2 pcs@15-1/4, 1 pc@19-1/2")
8 pcs 5/16" x 3-1/2" stainless lag screws
8 pcs 5/16" stainless washers
8 pcs 1/4" x 1" stainless lag screws
4 pcs 1/4" x 1" stainless fender washers
4 pcs 3/4" Electrical conduit standoff straps (I used stainless because I had ready access, galvanized steel will do also).
6" of scrap 5/8" heater hose
(Total = about $35 USD)

Nice. I like the straps to secure it to the rack. I've been debating drilling through the rack it's self but holding off to see if I can find a good clamp system.

I would suggest 1/4" x 1-1/4"-1-1/2" stainless u-bolts for your box. I would slip some 5/16 rubber tubing over them to reduce damage to the paint on the rack rails. Looks like you can secure to the side and/or bottom rack rails with the fit of your box.

Are the corners of the box continuous welded?

Nice work on the boxes guys. I think this thread defines the difference between a MP owner and a Sidewinder guy. Personally I'd take one of each but I'm an MP guy so I can't afford a 'winder.

U-bolts will work too. I want to make sure clamps can't be removed and bolted from the inside. Harder to steal. Not that I'm too concerned of this happening, but I'd be so mad because of all the work in planning and building.

No the seams are riveted, not welded. Local shop wants $125 to tig weld. Not sure if I will spend the money

Very true, I didn't buy a MP to play around. My playing involves, pulling, hauling. I need to be doing something.
Though Sometimes it's nice to jump on something more nimble to mix it up.

Nice work guys.

I have that same Plano box. Without that plastic frame, the latches are blocked by the rack sides. Be gentle with those latches. They break easily. The cold probably doesn't help.

One more suggestion. You can buy plastic ammunition boxes cheap and they are durable and can be secured inside your main storage box.

Had some rough trails and Sub-Zero temps while putting on 300 miles last weekend and got some pretty serious cracks in the Plano box. Had some hard metal items bouncing around in there that did the damage. Going to glue some padding inside the replacement box to eliminate future troubles.

Try to secure things in the box, makes all the difference. Bungee cords, clamps? I make sure everything can’t move.
