I am getting ready to change the piston rings on my 03 RX-1 to the 05 rings. I want to eliminate the excessive oil consumption problem. Since there are so many engine builders on this forum, I am hoping I could get your advice. Two questions:
1. the engine has 6000 miles on it. Will I need to hone the cylinders as part of this rebuild in oreder to get them to seat properly. If so, I understand the nikasil coating is very hard so can you reccomend the source of the correct hone also
2. Will the 2005 piston rings work on the 2003 pistons?. According to the parts listing, it appears Yamaha updated the pistons also.

Thanks!!

The 03 RX1 has aluminum sleeves and many,if not all,the boosted engines egg shape the cylinders. In your application, with so many miles on it,it's likely the its the cylinders that are causing the oil cunsumption. You can check this with a dail bore guage. If you can't borrow one to use, they are about $65 on ebay and that will work fine for you.If the sleeves aren't round, within .001",you should eather get the block replated or iron sleeved.I recommend the sleeves for boosted engines

Are all the RX1 / Apex engines aluminum sleeved? I know the 03's were known for oil burning but I always thought it was a ring issue. Did they change the sleeve design some where along the way? Just wondering if a certain year and newer stock engine is better suited for a boost project?

I have had the same oil consumption per mile since the first ride so I doubt there is a problem with the cylinders. You actually think 6000 miles is a lot for this engine? This is the same cylinder technology used on the R1 and R6 sportbikes that will run 30,000+ miles without an issue.

Still trying to find out if the 05 piston rings will fit on 03 pistons.

Thanks!

The 05 rings will fit the 03 pistons as they are the same as 05 pistons.

I never got a straight awnser on this either. Theoretically yes you should re-hone but the nikasel is so tough that if the orginal cross hatching is still intact you can probably just re-ring. If you do need a rehone millenium technologies is the place and its honed with a diamond hone, dont even think a conventional honeing machine will touch the plating:

ANd if you do get it renick make sure they plug all the bolt holes!!!! Or you will be pulling bolts out of the block left and right!
