I went riding this weekend. A buddy and I both have Attaks. Everytime he put his sled in reverse, it would grind. My reverse worked fine, but started to grind later in the day when there was heavy load on it.
At one point my sled would not stop grinding even when it was out of reverse. I hope that the reverse just needs to be adjusted. However, I am concerned that the grinding may have damaged it.

Ouch....It's out of adjustment...I would have the dealer adjust it corectly and test it to see if you damage the gears ![Banghead :o| :o|](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/banghead.gif)

The linkage is the only adjustment. As far as the chaincase goes its very basic/simple design and I do not think it is a internal gear problem. I imagine if the linkage came loose you might not be activating the swing arm inside the chaincase far enough. Maybe your chain itself is loose.....If you say its doing it forward and reverse a loose chain sounds possible.
Check for loose chain and then the linkage (pull handle all the way to the chaincase. That's where I would start. I have taken so many chaincases with reverse apart I just can't imagine one of these 2 things isn't the problem.
Yamaha's with reverse have a different feel when you tighten the chain. A bit soft not real definate with it's feel. I have not tightened it correct in the past when changing tracks and had some grinding. Unless you were really hammering on it you probably didn't do any damage but I would change the chaincase oil and inspect everything for burrs, etc.

Mine only makes the noise when I'm backing up a hill or at an angle!

Mine does it all the time and I have a GT.
This weekend.I pulled the belt into the big bulley and had to take the cover off and pull the belt out of the big pulley
Mine has a real hard time backing up.I have to use full throttle to get it to back up.
