riding with exhaust leak

Quick question for ya'll. I have three Apex's (3 GT's and on RTX). The three 2007 GT's have 6200 - 7600 miles on them and the RTX about 3500 miles. I started two of the GT's today and they both sould like they have a sputter coming from under the sled near the drive axel. I can only assume that these are blown donuts or cracked Y pipes. We are heading out for a 6 day trip (1500-1800 miles) this thursday. What are the risks to riding the sleds like this?

Thanks for the help

WOW! thats a tricky 1 to answer...well 1st of all you can or will damage your headers FLANGES if not already done...2nd concern is your heat shield will take a beating cuz of HIGH temp exhaust leak will burn the insulating material lining it...and don't forget the GAS TANK is right above your exhaust! HEAT, PLASTIC & GAS don't really mix very well if you get the drift.

I wouldn't run them if they sound that bad...

You still have a 1 1/2 day or so to wrench, take them apart tonight and get parts tomorrow and put them together...it isn't that bad of a job, once you get 1 done the others will be a breeze.

I did my RX1 a couple years ago, its not that bad of a job but there is no way I can have the parts in time. We are supposed to get 12- 14" of snow starting tonight and by the time I order online with overnight shipping the parts wont be here until Thursday, which is when we are leaving. They dont sont terribly bad, but they do sputter a bit when I first start them. This is our last trip of the season so I was hoping to make this a nice summer project, probably replace the exhaust with excell while I am at it. I will keep an eye/nose on them and hopefully we will be ok

run'em.
my apex has 4000miles and has been a backfiring beyach for 800 of them.
getting them fixed now.
noticed it was only really bad when the pipes got hot in low snow conditions.....
if you keep a good amount snow on them to keep them cool.

Keep us posted...I'm going through the same thing now too. I opted to cancel my trip and get it fixed. It was starting to pop when coming just off idle. I been told that could be due to exhaust fumes being sucked back onto the airbox.

It will be completely apart by tomorrow.

RX1 exhaust rattle

I think I am in the same boat with a small rattle comming from the front area of track. Rear exhaust seems fine and close to motor fine also. I am hoping maybe I just have a loose flange or heat shield? I plan on pulling suspension and checking it out since all the new snow is staying south, Good luck.

I'll give ya'll a full report when we return. Last trip we did about 1000 miles over 4 1/2 days and no one complained of any backfiring at all. The fluttering sound is very subtle and you can only hear it when you compare it to the newer RTX.

Well, we found 10 donuts in stock at the local dealer, so were going to replace all four on two of the sleds and replace two or the worse ones on one of the sleds. Hopefully that'll be good enough for the rest of the season and I'll replace the other two over the summer

Mine is backfiring every time I slow down and it wasn't the donuts...the flange on the left side pipe was busted off so you could see in there. I would be leery of riding with something like that...unless I was finishing a trip and had no other option....

Well, it took us a total of 5 1/2 hours to do three sleds. Two of them have two donuts that were 1/2 gone, all three had one donut about 3/4 gone and the other two were in decent shape. We did notice that the second pipe in from the clutch side seemed to be the worst on each sled. One of Y pipes had a small (1/8") crack on the flange. All are back together and running nice an smooth, very quiet. Hoping we caught the one Y pipe early enought to prevent further damage. All loaded up and ready to go.

Now that I ride these 4 stroke Yamaha's, the four thinks I always keep in stock are: spare drive belt, set of hyfax, set of carbides, and 4 EXHAUST DONUTS. Don't leave home without them, especially the hyfax, and exhaust donuts.

Let us know how the trip goes and if all the repairs hold up well. Im gunna get a set of donuts to keep in the garage.. I keep a spare rear wheel, spare smaller middle wheel, spare slides, spare carbides and ofcourse a spare belt and plugs.. I gotta get some donuts...

Mine was the same at 3k miles. Donuts seemed fine though. No noticeable exhust leaks,no broken donuts or worn down bad. Just the clutch side flange was cracking. Right was good. I replaced both.
