RippnV you dropped the skid, removed all the crap to get the gas tank off and replaced all those donuts, put the skids back in 5.5 hours?
Impressive!!!!

skid takes maybe half hr to 45 minutes all together to remove and replace for me. I had the donuts replaced and sled back together in two hours. So really its not hard if youve been doing the work yourself from day one. A three to three and a half hour job with experience.

My buddy did that trick on his and replaced all rivets with STAINLESS machine screws & nuts...works great and makes it easy to take apart next time around.
Same here. I think its a must do. Makes everything much easier. I've also made the mistake of using aluminum rivets. They all came loose. I did my buddies sled and his did the same thing. I only used 6 screws. 2 on each side and 2 in the middle. I think the pipes get in the way if you use more...

Clamps
I've done several by removing about 1.5mm (1/16") off the round clamp spacer, seems to keep them in place. Removing this amount keeps the sides of the clamps about 1mm in diameter away from the exhaust pipe. IMO, taking too much off the spacer would cause them to clamp down on the diameter of the y-pipe or header which could cause them to wear through with vibration/heat etc.
RippinV said:Well, i replaced the donuts and found one Y pipe had a small crack on the flange. Put 260 miles on yesterday and after about 50 miles today she`s backfiring every time i come to a stop, so i can only assume that the crack is expanded. «just ordered the right side replacement pipe from port along with 4 more donuts. i hope that solves the problem
question ? ive noticed that the flanges that bolt down around the donut spin when fully compressed, do you need to grind down that spacer some or do the flanges need to be replaced as wel????

Before season I replaced my donuts. When I reinstalled I didn't even put that bracket back in above the y-pipes. Basically my y-pipes are freefloating between the flex pipes and the rear muffler. I did this to prevent any binding and breakage that might occur. I realize this could have a reverse effect on the y-pipes and cause them to move more and break sooner but from experiance I have about 2500 miles on this year and I just checked last night... I have no exhaust leak. So I don't know if mounting the y-pipes free floating is the answer or not but it has worked for me so far. Also, Because I removed that bracket That also eliminated the heat shield and the rivets in the shields which left holes in my tunnel to directly below my gas tank. So I used some heavy duty alluminum tape to cover all the holes. I put one about 3 layers of tape where the heat shield would have been. Then put electrical (black) tape across all the alluminum for some heat sink. The black tape might have been overkill but I don't think that will hurt anything.

what bracket are you talking about here? I haven't looked up under the sled with the skid out but i'm assumeing it's the bracket that the two allen screws go into?
I have to replace the left y-pipe and would like all the info i can get to make the job easier. Is dropping the skid necessary? Or can i slide the entire exhaust out the rear?
thanks,
dave

That sounds like a good idea but I'd be a little concern of you not having any support at the centre HEADER & EXHAUST junction, that junstion was prone to "SAG" and crack the exhaust transition pipe, in '08 they added a support...so by having this extra support your thinking would probably make a lot of sense! If I were you I'd add some support at the centre junction before you encounter any other problems, here are pics of centre support on '08 and newer models.

When I did mine I had the skid out anyway for a revalve, etc. But I have to help a friend do his RX1. Do I still have to remove his skid totally? or can I leave the front bolts in and let it drop down?

Just remove the 2 rear bolts. The fronts can stay in.

just got into mine. been sounding like a subaru, so bought the gaskets. had it torn down in less than 1/2 hr. donuts were as new, broken flex pipe. now have to order and wait. I was able to unbolt muffler and lossen y's and slide back enough to sneek donuts out without removing bracket or flex pipes. the broken flex pipehad a bulky weld on inside that rubbed against outer

actually, it was 5.5 hours to do three sleds, but we just replaced the donuts and did not remove the Y pipes, therefor did not drop the rear skid. However, my sled has a cracked Y pipe and it got progressively worse after this weeks 1000 mile ride, backfiring almost every deceleration. I have a new stainless one on order from PortYamaha. Will be dropping the rear skid today and removing that pipe as well as the rear suspension arms, those are going out to HalfBaked today.

Wow - did not know you could do the dougnuts without dropping the skid. Could have saved me a lot of time.

If you have to replace pipes, use stainless.
