well , let's see where to start, I will give it props it has balls! The stock clutching seems decent, a slight lag at first but really not bad. I could pretty much toss it any where I wanted , (I'm around 300 with gear) it didn't seem as tippy as I had initially figured it would be . The steering was HARD, seemed hard to steer in regualer conditions. 6" of soft, semi wet snow, I didn't like that, would have been beat in a few hours of muscling the bars around, just wasn't comfortable. (it had 10" of carbide on the stock ski's) Weight transfer was ok, nothing to smile about really, "stock rear skid" and I bottomed it out several times on 6 ft. jumps.
Front seemed to soak up the usual bumps etc. fairly well but was like I said hard to steer. Over all the machine did really well in deep snow and if it weren't for the hard steering and vibration through the bars I'd give it high marks but man when I got off and was just sittin there shootin the #*$&@ , "I stunk", that is a BIG problem that I look forward to not dealing with. I could still smell the exhaust stink hours later. Now that I have ridden one and can comment on the machine as an over all package, I'd give it a 6 of 10, just didn't feel that comfortable on it.
When I first got on my MM it just felt good, a little tippy but felt solid, secure , this is the feeling I didn't get with the doo....... The track angle and how much is actually on the ground is awesome, when you tap the brake you can alsmost make the front of the track touch the ground , right where it contacts the rail tips, They have that part down! Fit and finish wasn't bad just plastic feeling , kind of cheap.
So in closing I will confidently say that if the Mnt. Apex feels comfortable when you first get on it and reacts in a way that makes the rider feel secure, comfortable, stable and steers fairly easy, WELL Yamaha will be number one in 3 years for sure! I was just not that impressed with the "suppose to be" great Skidoo mnt. sled. Nothing made me say ,"DAMN I want one of those" . Actually found myself not liking more things about it than I liked, and I own a Skidoo Formula 500 (wifes) I'm not biased. If I'm spending $12000.00 on a toy I want the one that feels the best, Skidoo just isn't that! I look forward to my apex and hope that the higher stance still feels secure and the steering isn't to damn hard. My MM steered nice, allowed you to concentrate on other things, the steering just happened naturally with no thought, you didn't have to think about it.
If Yamaha would drop 50lbs off the weight, which wouldn't be to hard , seat, exhaust, battery,a-arms etc. while maintaining dependability it would be the best Mnt. sled for sure. I'd like to see it offered in a 151x16 or 156x16 as well for those of us that want to be able to boondock and throw it around in the tree's. Just my .02
