Hey Guys,
I had a bit of a rollover this weekend in the mountains. Machine rolled 3 or 4 times and was not running when I got to it. I started it and it shutdown on error code 30, which is low oil pressure. So I coasted it down and had the same result a couple more times. After letting it sit for a bit it fired up and all seems fine. So I guess I'm looking for some input on what was going on and if I am at risk for any motor damage? Thanks

I would say your fine, just check the oil level and fill it back up if it is low. It probably just took a while for the oil to settle back down into the engine to the point where the sensors say everything is ok.

After a roll over you can have a air bubble in the line between the tank and oil pick up in the engine. Flip the sled up on the left hand ski( clutch side for about 20 seconds that way the air bubble goes into the oil-tank( the high spot at the time and oil gets down to the pump. you should have instant oil-pressure after that.

If you are worried a tether would kill your engine immediately so it could never run on without oil-pressure. I saw a engine that was laying on its side and sucked air in the oil-pump --- killed the crank.

Yamaha did cover it under warranty though gave the guy a new engine.

My rx-1 mtn has the oil light come on sometimes when I have it on it's side cinstantly boondocking or when I'm vertical off a bank a lot. I've been told it's just because the oil goes up onto the head of the engine so as long as you let it sit for a while all will be fine. just don't try and run it until the light goes. Flick it on to check the light and if it's still on flick it off again.

rx1 don't have a oil pressure sender l ike apex...

so you'll only see it when there is no more oil in tank... but if an air bubble get into the oil pine you may have zero oil pressure and have no warning light coming on.

It's totally normal, oil drains out of tank into airbox. You need to level the sled, check to make sure their is oil in the tank, then idle for a minute or so. As long as oil is in the tank you are ok, the pump just needs to prime and while it's priming you get low oil pressure.

I doubt any damage was done, i've had this happen a few times, it's pretty normal for mountain riding.

Oh, and as far as the light coming on when the sled tips, you need to add more oil to the tank

Sorry for bumping a old thread but anyways,

Won't the sled (Apex) shut down if the oil pressure gets low?
If the sled lays on its side or upside down, the oil pressure should get low after a while ...?

I mean, even if there would be air bubbles in the oil channel, it would probaby shut down due to low oil pressure.
If there is no oil it can't possibly indicate full oil pressure??

Still, if you roll over and the throttle is pinned, the engine should be OK if killed before the low oil pressure cut kills it?

I believe that if the engine is reveing..the sensor will not work. :o| .I think this also aplies to the over heat sensor too.it has to be idelling.my sled has shut down a few times cause of low oil pressure.when it was up side down..lol..and never had an isue..just add oil..and they burn oil too.except my wife who drives slow. ;):D .lol.if it doesnt burn a little..then just boot it harder. ;)! .lol.but thats normal ..for any motor being pushed.

Hey thanks

For how long time have the sled been upside down before oil pressure cut on engine?

Regards

The biggest issue is the engine revving up or running hard when sucking air , I know of one that took out one of the centre crank bearing's that way.

If you have a tether on it or it goes completely upside down it will just shut of and no harm will be done.

If you restart it and it takes a couple tries to get oil pressure at idle I would not worry to much about that.

If you are a aggressive rider or tend to screw up once in a while the tether is a must for safety ---your's and the sled engines.

cheers...............

Since the last time I posted on this thread a year ago, OFT racing has released a rollover valve for the Apex. I would recommend that anyone using an Apex in the mountains buy one immediately, it is the best possible insurance against everything posted in this thread.

mudd99..thanks for info.. ;)! ..this is something I am deffinately putting on.
mushkin..it should turn off in 15-20 seconds..I m pretty sure thats how long..not really paying attention. :drink: .cause I know its no big deal..unless its revving.. ;)!

I never had an issue with my Rx-1 light coming on due to the sled being on its side while riding. I just insalled the OFT tether w/ the shut off valve on the Apex. Install was straight foreward, the 2" hose for the jake valve should have been 2 1/2" and the 3" 90* hose should be 3 3/8" to get a perfect fit and finish. Other than that, if it works like it looks, it will do the job perfectly
