i have to run my track pretty tight so it wont ratchet. is this hard on your bearings in your rear bogie wheels?

I doubt that you could tighten it more than the ENGINE does, so no, don't worry about your bearings.
Aside from that, if you have to run the track too loose, it means that there is something wrong. If its a proaction skid, a common problem is a cracked W-arm (it cracks on the bottom side about where the straps cross). On ANY skid, it could be due to worn bushings, limiter straps out too far, or even transfer rod adjusted too far.
