Hey changed from 700 triple last year to 03 RX1 and dont know a whole lot about these new 4strokes! I was just looking for power mods and wanting to do a custom exhaust. Has anyone cutout the cross in the midpipe and ran straight pipe straight back from the headers into a slip-on performance muffler for the R1 bikes, what are your thought on doing this? Also would i lose performance and from not enough backpressure if i just ran it open with no muffler? any other probs? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I run both a gutted stock exhaust on my 05 and a Hauck Gyt-R-Dun pipe on the 03. Both sound awesome. The Hauck pipe is a LOT lighter but has issues with both studs hitting it and rocks and tunnel ice tearing it apart. The Hauck pipe has a single pipe design with a large reinator in the center of the tunnel. The pipe goes from 2" to 4" and back to 2". The 3 pipes are riveted and not welded. Everything catches on the lip. I have ripped the pipe apart several times with debris and no have welded both ends of the resinator. Even with extra tunnel protectors the studs still strike the center of the pipe and it looks like it has been to war.

With most exhaust mods on the 4 stroke engines, you won't gain horsepower, maybe slightly, but not much, usually are more likely to lose horsepower.
The only real reason to do an exhaust mod on these sleds is to lighten them or change the sound without being obnoxious to others.
You are better off making sure the horsepower you have is being used most efficiently!
What RPMs are you running at with WOT?
Should be about 10,400.
Much more or less will make a big difference!
With the RX-1, the single biggest improvement to my sled was the Apex bars with a 6" Articulating riser and adding foam to the seat!!!
No kidding.
This made the sled FAST!
Simply because I can now fly through rough stuff without it beating me.
Using the stock bars you want a 4" Articulating riser.
You won't believe the difference in handling.

No gain in hp that you will ever notice. Most of the time you will lose hp by what your talking about.
If you want more sound gut the stocker and call it good.

Not much to do for power, NGK CR10EK plugs give 2hp throughout the entire power curve but I couldn't feel a difference.
Gearing might be your best bet, go down a tooth on the top and she'll rip your arms off.
I know your after power but on the 03 if your changed out the front springs and went to a 13mm sway bar you would love the handling, makes you faster in ther woods
Have fun, ride first and see what you dont like and post back, lots of help here.

Also just as a FYI the SINGLE BEST MOD I have done to the sled is bar none the Apex seat.
If you find one cheap I woudl grab it search for how to do the mod and you will never want to get off the sled. I prefer a Apex GT they are softer then the others and wow they are comfortable.
A VERY close but VERY expensive 2nd option is the ZX2 rear suspension. Made my old rx-1ton into a ditchbanging and rought terrain sled, its amazing the confidence it instills in the rider.

Oh Mama! I just went from 21/40 to 19/40 on my mtn, no snow yet but in my ride around the yard it scared the heck out of me! Gearing will sacrifice top end so it depends on how you ride. Very cheap and easy.

Usually one tooth lower on the top gear will increase acceleration AND increase top end a bit, due to the motor being better able to pull the speed with the lower gearing.
Note that you may have to change the drivechain with a gear change.

Where can I find how to change the gears?

Look in the 4 stroke garage section, RXRIDER did a great write-up on the chaincase, in his sled build thread.
