RX-1 tipped over, now won't run

Well, it was one of those snowmobile rides that lasted about a mile.

My wife was on the 2003 RX-1 and tipped it crossing a tall bank. It was deep, wet snow so no harm to her or the sled body. It sat there for a minute or so and of course it wouldn't start after we got it upright. We got it going after ten minutes but it was only on a couple of cylinders. I checked the plugs and two of them were black like coal. I cam e back an hour later with four new CR9E's. It started right up and ran great, for about five minutes. I got it home and on the trailer but it wouldn't idle. So now today the sled's cold and it starts instantly and purrs on high idle, revs real nice. But as soon as it gets to temp and comes off the high idle it slowly idles down and dies. That's it.

Just a shot in the dark here, but, check the oil. I have read somewhere on here that if they are tipped on there side there is a chance that the oil pump can pump oil out the crank case (I think)breather tube. Aparently it only takes a few seconds to pump most of the oil out. If that happens and the oil is low, the engine has a safety on it that will/should go into a limp mode and possibly shut down to prevent further damage. Again, I have had no first hand experience with this, it is just stuff that I have read on here. Some one else with more experience will eventualy chime in and help out. I do know from experience that if you let it idle too long it will get to warm and will shut it's self off to prevent an overheat situation

Check the fluid levels and then take off the air box. There could be a whole bunch of oil in the filter causing it to starve for air.

No, not yet. But I'm sure it won't take much. Maybe what was suggested or maybe a bit of dirt in the carbs. It's ran super in the past as well it should, it's a minter with only 900 miles.

I'll have to figure it out because it looks like it will be for sale soon. Oh well.

The oil does not pump out via the oil pump. It drains into the airbox if its up side down. Its why many have installed the roll over valve to prevent the oil from draining. As the poster has righted the sled and started it without a low oil light on plus two plugs where black I'm with sled dog and leaning towards the air box snow filter being plugged up with oil causing it to stall when it comes off high idle.

The poster said he got it home and on to the trailer so it sounds like it ran but won't idle right. It starts and runs then dies slowly after warmup. If the carbs where plugged up it would die almost instantly and idle rough. I'd clean the airbox and filter of oil and if it still won't idle or idles rough with a small amount of throttle applied Id clean the carbs as when it was up side down dirt could have been sucked into the jets.

Hope what these guys are saying helps you out, I rolled over my 03 this year and it sat with the track to the sky for at least 5 minutes, I was on a huge hill and couldn't roll it toward the uphill side alone and didn't want to let ir roll the rest of the way down the hill. When my buddy showed up we rolled it over and I looked it over, checked the oil and then it fired right up and ran fine. I must have been lucky. Good Luck!

Just got it out of storage. Started right up, ran great until it warmed up. I mean it purred. Then like clockwork it died, wouldn't start back up, and all four plugs are black as coal. I'm beginning to think this has nothing to do with the tip over. I think it's tome to remove the carbs and check 'em over.

Update:

Runs awesome now!

I set all floats to 13mm and replaced four rubber o-rings on the main jet holders. They were hard. I mean to remove them you had to use a knife to pry them off in pieces.

So the carbs are super clean and setup. It starts and and idles beautifully. I let it idle over five minutes, jumped on it, and took off. No hiccups at all. Wouldn't you know it now I have to sell it. That sucks.
