After picking the great brains on this site I am going ahead with long-tracking my 03 rx1m to 159.
Based upon information that I found here I would also like to do the 04 jackshaft bearing update and add a rear heat exchanger while I am doing this project.
I bought the Hartman kit (extensions and track) and was wondering if I will be able to add the Yamaha rear heat exchanger on the aftermarket extension? Tom Hartman didn't like the idea and proposed running copper pipe along the underside perimeter of the extension as a cooling device instead.
Opinions?

I think the yamaha exchanger could work with his extension - but you might have to build a bracket to make it work. Typically aftermarket extensions tip up more than stock. So the front rivets would probably be ok - but the rear rivets would not work.
The only problem I see with the copper tubing is that if you get hit from the rear you will most likely hit the pipe. I'm not sure if what the weight difference or capacity difference would be.
You might contact Lazy Bastard - and ask for pics of his set up. I think he has an aftermarket extension and the Yamaha exchanger (I can't remember for sure though)

You might want to compare the price difference for the aftermarket u-cooler MPI (16" W x 20" L) has against the price of the stock Yamaha one. If the u-cooler works for MPI's extension, it should work on the Hartman extension also (or so one would think).
Edit; I should add though I have over 2000 miles with out another cooler and no overheating problems yet.

OEM heat exchanger will work, but you will need a drop bracket for it.

Before those last few responses were posted I went ahead and ordered the OEM one. Thank you all!
I spend the summers in the flatlands to get away from the tourists; but, I am heading home to the mountains tomorrow to start working on the sled. Winter is a comin'!

I've got a stock one sitting in my garage , I tried to make it work with an aftermarket rear extension - it sucked . Get an aftermarket one made for an aftermarket rear extension.
If you make a drop bracket for it , it won't have the proper transfer of heat to the tunnel like it should .

I found LB's older post on using the copper as brackets. I am going to try that route, since I already ordered the oem.

Are you sure you need the additional cooler? Never put one on mine and no problems in 5000kms. Has never gotten hot. Turbocharged too.

Lots of overheating last year when trying to extend the season as long as possible. Spent way too much time packing the boards with snow.

Did you ever check your coolant mix....I do believe one of the problems with too thick of coolant. I just put a new MPI tunnel on mine and figured to use the stock cross over and see if it doesn't need it any more.

Based on the design of the cooler, there will really be no appreciable heat transfer to an OEM extension. It would actually require a significant amount of PRESSURE between the two in order to conduct heat. In fact, with the drop bracket, you will make the TOP of the heat exchanger into an ADDITIONAL cooling surface since the track will throw snow up ON TOP of it.

There you go getting all scientific on me again .
I guess more than anything , I didn't like how it looked hanging down back there.

T - You know, every time that I saw a post regarding coolant mix I told myself that I need to check mine.... and I never did. I should have done that first.
LB - Thank you for reposting that pic, all I had before was the little thumbnail of your setup. This pic will be helpful.
