rx1 at -28c

Two mornings in a row last week with the temperature at -41, my RX1 would not start on its own. I was riding with Sketr and lakercr. Sketr's Warrior started the first morning, but he is running synthetic oil. Lakercr and I had to hook up the jumper cables to my 03 RX-1 and it started after about 20 minutes.

The next day it was even colder, and neither sled would start. Had to put jumper cables on both sleds. Sketr's started after about 20 minutes. Mine took a good hour to get started. All the two stroke sleds riding with us started on their own except for one 96 Poo XLT.

For the record the coldest start I had was -32C...fired up no problem.

This year I hooked up a lead for a Battery Tender Jr. to my sled.

On an overnight trip...all I have to do is bring the portable charger with me and if it gets nasty cold I can plug it in. Cheap...as it only cost me $49 CDN and it will keep the battery charged and warm on a really cold night!

The nice thing about it is that I can take it off and use it for anything...not just a sled!

If you plan on doing any riding at -30c, do yourself a favor and spend the $70.00CDN for an inline block heater. At -40 you almost don't even need the choke, and your oil will flow freely over all of those expensive internals...

It sounds like Your problems is becouse of wrong battery charging from the beginning, when the sled is totaly new, the yamaha dealer should charge the battery with a special charger, it charge for about 3 hours and at the end it charges all the way up to 17-volt, this is to get the battery fully top charged, unless the battery will never be top charged and will only work about 75% of its really power, the last 25% is a must have in extreme cold weather
We had some problems earlier here in Norway just like this, but after we use this special charger it have never be a problem anymore.

it was -39 to -47 here for a week, and I think it froze to the core. I went out the other day and it fired up on its own- now today I have a REAL problem- see if you guys have ever heard of this one. I got the oil changed in my 99 Chrysler LHS, drove 50 km, then 200 km this morning at -35, very heavy fog, ice in the air, stopped and smelled oil, opened the hood, and by the dipstick there is a ton of oil. Took it to the dealer in the afternoon after pressure washing the oil out, its down 1.25L after I put 1L in before. The mech is thinking, and I am hoping that it was a frozen pcv valve. I drove 200km home, warmer and no fog, and no oil blowing out. There was no pressure at the oil fill or dipstick when idling or revving, so I am thinking that it is not a broken ring or a bad valve/seal. Anyone got any insight?

Been there, done that. It was pcv valve. It's the damn fog that does it.

I started mine at -36C last week. My Warrior was winein a bit but after about 5min. it started to smooth out. I don't know but riding in - 40 but thats is a bit too cold for me.

pcv valve

Next time its that cold and foggy, I am going to stuff Vmaxjohn under the hood to keep the pcv valve happy. I sure hope its the pcv.
