I was thinking about buying a 2003 Yamaha Rx1, are they any good and do they make good trail sleds?

Sure they do. I would search for a used mono-shock from an 05, re-valve and you will love it. Not a mogul masher though...keep that in mind.

they are a good sled. needs a few updates/upgrades but still an awsome sled to drive. test driving one is what made me look at them when i was up-grading in 2006.

Get an 05, updated rings as well as mono skid. Don't pass up a nice 05 Warrior. It does have the Pro-action rear skid but it works well at 136 inches. Plus you get better traction and bridge the bumps.

I agree with Mighty completely. The piston rings were updated in 2005 which solved most of the oil consumption issues. Many of the 2003 and 2004 engines demonstrated unacceptable oil consumption which cannot be solved with the use of additives (ring-free, seafoam) to the gas.
I have an 03 RX1, 121" track which i love except for the oil consumption. The sled now has 8000 miles on it and uses about 1 qt of oil every 600 miles. I have all the parts to disassemble the engine and install the 2005 rings.
I performed the air box mod and installed a clutch kit, night and day difference!!

Looks like Im going to buy one, for 3000$ with 3000km
I got BRP 6.9 powder ski'on my Mountain Max that are still mint, Im gonna swap them to this RX-1, and Add an extra skag on each. Its already been clutched.
-Thanks for all the feedback, keep it coming, I contacted the owner and its been confirmed as a 151" track.
Now I just gotta figure out a snowboard rack. (sold mine for new sled, and wasnt sure if i wanted to put it on the RX with the exaust)
