Not sure about the 2011+ Apex speedo bearings as I haven't replaced mine yet but on the 98 Vmax I ordered a replacement which Im sure would work right up to 2010 and its sealed. Its an NTN bearing that is not serviceable at all, is this the way they come now or what other alternatives do I have?

It should have double lip rubber seals on both sides.
The best way to extend service life on these is to remove one rubber seal with a dental pick type tool, clean the old grease and moisture (it will look like Nutella chocolate spread) out with a spay cleaner of your choosing and repack the bearing with a needle greaser attachment on your grease gun, then reinstall the rubber seal. Its good to do this right before the long off-season storage of the machine.
Owners are getting many thousands of miles out of this bearing this way.

Don't forget the one behind the secondary also! Have not had to replace a bearing in years doing this on all three of my sleds.

I am talking the jackshaft (behind secondary) not the driveshaft (spedo).

I repeat, there is no rubber type seal to pick off and service. I have asked the dealership to find me a replacement NTN bearing that is serviceable. The bearing isn't completely sealed either so washout is possible

The bearings I purchased in the past have had removable seals. But like I said have not had to replace one in a long time by keeping them greased so maybe they changed them to keep bearing sales up. LOL I just looked at my spare bearings (I have an assortment for skid frame wheels, spedo and jackshaft just in case) and they all still have removable seals. Try ordering one from Port Yamaha, that is where I purchased all mine.yamahahaapex said:I repeat, there is no rubber type seal to pick off and service. Ask them to get you an apex one and see if that fits the vmax if it does not you still have one for your sled. Let us know if it works or not.

the sealed one will work for a 1st gen apex or this vmax as I have an old one to compare to. the speedo bearing size is different in 2011 due to the driveshaft size being enlarged so its a completely different part number, im also not sure at this point if the 2011+ bearing replacements are serviceable either. the one in there now is.

If the bearing is sealed you can drill a small hole through the metal cover and apply grease through a needle. There is a thread somewhere on this site showing that mod, the hole is small enough that very little grease comes out or water gets in.

Without seeing what you have I can only say that how do they make the seal non removable and still have a seal that must allow the inner and outer races travel at different speeds. Plus it must seal out the environment and at the same time keep the grease in!

put the new bearing on last night, it has been confirmed by the dealer and myself the bearing covers are not able to open and not they are not able to seal out the environment as when you spin the bearing you can see through a sliver around the cover of the bearing the grease moving inside. How do I know theyre for sure not serviceable? I picked the cover and bent it a tad in the process, fortunately it was the side facing away from inside of the tunnel. Still haven't found a number for a "serviceable" bearing yet...

surprisingly with 9400kms the bearing I pulled out was completely quiet too. Keeping for a spare
