Secondary Clutch Ajustment Apex GT

After realizing that my belt was sitting about 3/16" too low in the secondary sheaves I shimmed the clutch with the 3 appropriate washers from Yamaha. The thinner shim did not do much so I used one thick and one thin on each of the three bolts on the back of the secondary. The belt was now exactly where is should be according to the owners manual (just slightly above the sheaves). After testing this weekend I found that my Apex would not shift out. Tach was running way too high at moderate speeds. The belt was still at the proper height according to the manual. (keep in mind that this is a perfectly good belt with only about 400 miles on it). I then removed the shims entirely for the sake of my buddies that really didn't feel like waiting around for me to fool with my clutch. After checking the belt again after riding (with no spacers) the belt was back down low in the sheaves. Machine seemed to run well until I got my feelings hurt on the lake by a Doo 800. He didn't beat me by much but his sled was about 1 or 2 mph faster on top end. I could only get my speedo to read 112 mph max'd out. Has anyone else seen improvment by adding spacers and bringing up belt just higher that the sheaves as stated the owners manual. I feel like I am being cheated out of about 10-15 mph... Am I?????

Many posts on this, but shimming will not give you top end. It will only help out of the hole as it lowers the clutch ratio, i would equate it too starting off in second gear versus first. You've got to look a little deeper to figure out why that doo out front, it really should be no contest.

---Try cleaning your bushings in the secondary, I lube with graphite, make sure the buttons are all good....AND put on a white spring set @ 60....

That should make the dooboy cry......

i know were your coming from i got beat by some 800 doos i think it has something to do with fuel mixure i smell gas when i start my sled after a couple of runs ive been right through my sled checking bearings and everything else rpm is right on runs good just doesnt have the pull it use to have

rev 800's should be no contest,i shimmed my secondary becuz my belt was sitting low...take the belt off and the screws out,see if your sheaves are touching"they should be" if they are not u have to clean up the casting material that is preventing them from touching,i used a dremmel, put in 3 shimms and belt is where it should be,what a world of difference.... ;)!

Mine is on the way!

A couple questions...

Are the shims to make adjustments to the secondary clutch anything special, or just washers? Any specific part #'s from Yamaha?

What effects does the "white" spring & set at 60 have? Whats the "set at 60" in reference to?

any washer will work(6mm hole),make sure all 3 are same thickness..i thicker washer works for OLDER belts while thinner washers(like stockers) works for NEWER belts....

older belts and thicker washer you may need to grind of casting on bottom of sheaves...as youre now bringing sheaves tight together.
