I figured I'd post this for all to see. The sump oil bolt has been seized for a few seasons now and it was time for it to go. I always change oil and filter, but for the last couple seasons I was unable to get the sump bolt out. I even broke an extractor off in the rounded out Allen head. I picked up a bolt extractor kit from Canadian Tire over the summer on sale. Amazingly, I wrenched the sucker out. The 17MM socket is the perfect size. It snapped suddenly to the point where I thought I cracked the aluminum base of the engine.

Why would Yamaha put an Allen head there when it's likely to be seized the following season? Why not put a normal bolt there?

I'm not a fan of those allen head bolts either in locations like that. I bought a couple of racheting wrenchs the other day at Canadian Tire and they worked as advertised.

And the owners manual also say you only need to change the filter every 12,000 miles. At least 80% is in the tank I think that is good enough. And I have a float plate so that bolt is not easy to get to. But to each their own.

Changed my oil over the summer and that bolt came loose but didn't really want to

It always cracks loose reluctantly on our 3 machines. I always think it broke.
