What needs to be done to an apex MTX to ride in the flatlands? I'm thinking ditch riding and off trail riding with occasional groomed trails here in MN. I've heard that clutching and gearing might need to be changed, and what else? Are there any other differences between the MTX and the regular short track apex? I'm buying, and I want something that I can have fun with at home but also has the capability to run in deeper snow. I was looking at Attaks and LTX's with the 136 ripsaw but I don't think they will cut it, and I might be better off with the MTX. I want to make the right decision the first time. I'm trying to gather as much info as I can

144 or 153

we have an apex mountain 162..and an attack 136..2007 :yam: ...the warrenty is over so I am now taking off the tunnel of mine to put everything on hers..getting a V E tunnel :-o .stage 1 :-o ..and another tammer suspention.. :-o .the 136 is a joke...anything deeper than just under a foot is a joke :o| ..sure you move ...but you dont play..you really need those paddles..had a summit 144 and it had paddles and made it fun it had straight slides,,no tip up in the back...hell no ware on the hyfax either..lol.....the new nytro looks good..but you do need those lugs..not likeing the tipped tail..my 162 is tiped,,at the tail too..and it wares the hyfax where it bends...ice age rails are straight..might be better..its really hard to have both worlds.....just trailer to where it snows the most.. ;)! do the clutch..mine over reves..

Well I'm also considering getting the Attak, extending to 144 and putting a 1.5 or 1.75 paddle under it. You pretty much summed up what I've been hearing about the ripsaw sucking in powder. But wondering if it would be cheaper to set up the MTX for flatland riding instead, and what the pros and cons are of running the mountain sled on trails and ditches.

The MTX is fine in the flat land. You dont have to do anything, I ride mine in Iowa a few times a year and dont change anything.

If I was going to ride it more in the flats I would get a second set of clutch weights and have them set-up for low elv. That only takes about 30 minutes to swap out.

The ski stance is adjustable, so that would be a quick change too. The gearing is fine, the sled will still do 100mph on the speedo with the mountain gearing in it. Eric

My MTX will only see the mountains 3-4 times a year, the rest is all flatland.
I removed my outer idler wheels and slider wear doesn't sem to be an issue for me. I haven't put scratchers on yet.
I have almost 600kms running N/A right now and the only thing I would change is gearing. It is geared down a bit low for trail running.
Other than that just make sure you pop into the powder once in awhile to cool the slides and it makes a good trail sled.

change the clutch..

for sure you must do the clutch...i am over reveing....on flat land...just that this year was hard on the slides...lots of really hard packed trails...used my scratchers and still had to put wheels at the front and also where the track turns up under where i sit...take them of when not on the trails...i am sure that the turned up tail has something to do with it always wareing there... :o| love my 162...and still would not change it...but it does make a hell of alot of noise when the trails are hard...lol..sounds like the winter tiers on my truck..lol..

My dealer installed a 'sea level kit' in mine, taller gearing, and clutching changes, i cut my track down to 1.75" and love it.
