I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a set of simmons skis for my RTX. It's the best sled in the world - but the skis feel down right dangerous sometimes. Great in hardpack (shims, ski savers, and Bergstrom triple points) but in powder, or god forbid, crust, it's a life & death experience. Anyway, my questions:

1) Is 6" carbide on inside and 4" outside a good bet for this sled with 144 studs down the middle?

2) I keep hearing how "wide" these skis are. Will two sleds (only 1 with simmons skis) still fit fine on a standard ten foot enclosed trailer (sled dock top & yacht club bottem)

3) Are you simmons guys running shims with these skis?

4) Anyone have good prices?

Any other tips appreciated

:rocks:

1- i'm running 6 inside 4 outside, new carbides on glare ice i can skid the rear around! LOT of bite. I also have 144 1.375" studs down middle
1- the actual width of my sled I don't think it's any wider, just wider feeling because the carbide is on outside of ski.
3- not sure if I need shims yet, but I did just stick piece of rubber in for short ride but not any real good snow to ride trails yet.
4- got mine off ebay 2 or 3 yrs ago, not sure where best price is now.

I got mine off a guy on snowest. He's a dealer or whatever. New complete with 4 inches of carbide on the inside and out they were 355 shipped. I can find his name if your intrested.

Yes!!!...I have Simmons on BOTH my RX-1 and my Viper ER and can load both............it's tight but they DO fit. I'm assuming you mean a standard 101" wide trailer??? I have a Triton w/Bearcat top.

Yes 101,

Thanks Buddah2

Yes, two sleds fit fine on the trailer. You can actually have two sleds with Simmons and they both will fit side by side. If you have track guides on your trailer, the outer carbide on the Simmons might be slightly off the ski guide.

Didn't shim my skis with the Simmons and had zero darting problems.

I have 96 studs down the center and a 6" inside 4" outside seems like the right combination. It takes a little more effort to turn the Simmons skis versus stock. I also tried 6" on the outside but it was too much in my opinion and really a waste of money. Stick with 6" on the inside and 4" on the outside.

I've used these skiis for awhile now.{4th year,3rd new sled approx. 8000 mls} When using simmons I've never had any darting issues I did shim the skiis last year on RX-1 mainly to get the carbide on the snow and the noncarbide section of stock runners off. In doing this I increased mls by double at the rate of wear.I ran the simmons runners 6" for alot of mls and in normal snow conditions they worked great aggressive riding. Here in Ny. we get alot of low snow and edge of road riding. I switched to bergstrom triples 8" and Berg. 4". The 8's do a good job and the carbide is farther ahead to help in wear and bite. I don" like the 4"s for our cond. I bent one quite bad and felt it didn't have as much bite but to be fair I'm still playing with the setup on this RTX. I've just bought 6" shapers to run with the 8"triples but havn't had snow. I think if you look under your skiis with it sitting on concrete floor you'll see what I mean about where the carbide wear point is and can tell if you need to shim. good luck simmons work great but it still comes down to setup. :yam:

Thanks for the tips.
I've never had a ski on a Yamaha that didn't need to be shimmed. These will probably benefit from it as well.

I have simmons on my RTX, I put the studboy 4and 6's on as well.
I put my 6" on the outside,is this wrong?
I was allways told to run the 6 on the outer.
I also have 1/4" shim in the rear as well.

Well - they are on the way. $380 to my door with 6" carbides and mounts.

For install - do you use the rubber pieces from the Yamaha spindles or does the mount kit come with different ones?

I put simmons on mine when the sled was new. It darted like mad. I shimmed them this week and have since put 300 "dart free miles" on them.
