pilots
If I can get a set for a good price I'll try them just to compare!

This is true, my dealer had a set of 06 Pilots in stock and I had him order me a set of 07 Pilots. When they came in we compared them side by side and the 07's are thicker in the area they had problems with last year. I think the Pilot skis will give you the best of both worlds. They will carve better then the precisions because they have a single carbide in the center that bites deeper in the snow and it will also help prevent darting because in conditions where darting is a problem both carbides will contact the snow. This is only my opinion and nothing more but thats why I bought Pilot skis and not precisions or Simmons.mrance111 said:Dan, Doo did beef up that thin area. I compared the 06 and 07 side by side and you can plainly see that the area in question is thicker. They could have gone thicker but definitely a huge improvement over the 06.

I'll use your opinion if you have also have ridden simmons on an apex/attak?
i havent, but 9 out of 10 people that i talked to that have them said that the steering is heavy at lower speeds and they push in soft snow. i have tried the yamaha mtn skis and c&a's and didnt like either on this chassis.
Thanks for all the opinions. I have decided to save the $$$ and go with the Pilots with 6" Woody's in the center and 4" Woody's on the outside.

I will admit they CAN push....but with shaper bars there's no pushing whatsoever....guess I have to experience the rx rider forward chassis with them to see if they are heavy steering...again, from a prior post...a lot of guys were just bolting the simmons on from other yammies with the wrong mounts...the "N" or "wide" mount are wrong and will make a heavier steer..

Re: pilots
I'm going to try out a set of pilots too, when we get some snow so I can compare them to my simmons skis. Do you guys that run Pilots think I should try the 06 pilots or 07 pilots? I only ask because I have access to both years because both my Doo buddies have already changed from Pilot skis to Simmons Skissj said:If I can get a set for a good price I'll try them just to compare!

I run sharper bars and have no push on my Apex or Viper,I do have the right mounts on each sled though, that is what I think some people are doing wrong, useing the wrong mountssj said:I will admit they CAN push....but with shaper bars there's no pushing whatsoever....guess I have to experience the rx rider forward chassis with them to see if they are heavy steering...again, from a prior post...a lot of guys were just bolting the simmons on from other yammies with the wrong mounts...the "N" or "wide" mount are wrong and will make a heavier steer..

Now you got me confused..........Why would you go to the Pilots if your buddies tried them and don't like them? Doesn't that tell you something? Unless you can get a pair for free to try.yamaouch08 said:I run sharper bars and have no push on my Apex or Viper,I do have the right mounts on each sled though, that is what I think some people are doing wrong, useing the wrong mountssj said:I will admit they CAN push....but with shaper bars there's no pushing whatsoever....guess I have to experience the rx rider forward chassis with them to see if they are heavy steering...again, from a prior post...a lot of guys were just bolting the simmons on from other yammies with the wrong mounts...the "N" or "wide" mount are wrong and will make a heavier steer..

Did you have to do anything different to mount the pilots? Spacers or rubber mounts on the bottom of the skis or do they just bolt up?machzed said:LazyBastard said:When you're thinking about the "pilot" skis, you need to think about their history.
1) First, there was Simmons. Doo liked them so much that they copied them (poorly) "precision".
2) Simmons didn't like that so they took Doo to court and won. Doo was ordered to stop making "precision".
3) Rather than admitting to doing something ILLEGAL to make a buck, Doo decided to distract everyone from the court order by making a new ski that was just sufficiently different that it no longer infringed on patents "pilot".
Are "pilot" better? No. They just exist to confuse the weak-minded.
LOL...that is funny....I hope you were just making a joke....right?
I have ridden several BUDS sleds over past few seasons with the OLD precisions...and when they came out alot of people loved them...however of you wanted to TURN in a less then hardpack type trail, they would PUSH badly....since then we all learned how poorly the precision design was...it would shine when it came to darting..but in about every other aspect it was WORSE then traditional single carbide skis..mostly in the carving aspect...
any article anywhere will say the same thing..precisions ride up onto of the snow, the design makes them "Float".....the "weak-minded" statement really is bizarre...
Honestly I think the simmons or pilot will blow away the stock apex ski in any condition of trail or powder....But to say that one is far superior to another is really tough...
as far as light feeling, good carving.....all you need to do is look at the two designs side by side, and you can plainly see the pilots will be lighter feeling....as only one carbide rides on the ground most the time...
I know aftermarket stuff brings out everyones opinions and some guys have stronger Opinions then others....just like how much we love our 4 strokes vs the old school 2 strokers....
I dont think you can go wrong with either of these....i know guys who swear by simmons and guys who love the OLD precisions,or guys who love the pilots...but when you have used all of them at least a few times,I think you will see pilot design is different, and the latest and newest idea in designs...
bottom line is,you can setup your sled to make about any ski feel pretty good....but i found when throwing on the pilots,it was cheapest way to get best ride and turning..and easiest install.
I ordered the 07 Pilots today.

My dealer is yammie/doo dealer...he knew what i needed, and ordered a MOUNT kit...which was a bag of carbides, two different rubber bumpers, and the bushings and bolt/nut....also i think the rivets were in this kit too,for the hoop.
My dealer did the hoop for me cause of the heavy design rivets involved....or you could use a SS bolt/nut i guess..?
He had done so many at the dealer that he told me about turning around one bushing,so it would bolt up to yammie perfectly....very simple.
stock carbides work well...i beleive only 4 inchers..keeps it light but still carves good for me.
07s are apparently abit thicker in one area, which is great!
