OK, so I don't have an RX-1 yet, but it's coming, I'm starting to collect parts for mods as I see a decent deal. I bought a set of Apex skis (they will serve on my MM for a while) and just missed a Maverick (Apex) track locally for $300-nuts!
Anyway, the post is really about the M7 skid vs. the Apex. I understand I should be looking for a 151" (or is it 153?) M7 skid, I don't see any for sale right now. Will a 162 work? I'm inferring that the RX chassis geometry is sufficiently different that this will be too long. How does the M7 compare to the Apex skid for weight and performance? I see a couple Apex skids over on Snowest, might need to pick one up. I have done a fair amount of searching for info here, but am not quite finding this discussed.
Also, 15 vs. 16 inch wide tracks...will both skids work with either? I'm not sure if the hi-fax position is the same, or if they are spread wider with the 16's.
Thanks all.
Bri

153 M7 skid is much better than the stock skid. A 162M7 skid will be VERY long but you can probably do it. the 153 skid accomadates a 162 track with room to spare, so i think a 162 skid will fit a very long track.
Not sure if ive seen an apex skid on an RX1. should work theoretically. The M7 skid is much lighter than the stock 151 and lighter than the apex skid. Performance on the M7 is also very good.
The apex comes stock with a 16 wide track. the M7 skid appears to be able to work with a 16 wide, but i havent tried it yet.

I had the M7 141" skid for my RX-1 151" and it was a great ride and excellent weight savings. I now have a 162" Apex skid under my RX-1 and haven't had any ride time but am concerned with the weight. If I were to do it again, I would get a 07 153" M7 skid or Holz skid. Both decent ride with good weight savings. I would sacrifice ride for good weight savings any day!

Yup, what they said. I'd take the m7 skid anyday and would get the 153". Did you check at RVsports.com????

Does the Apex skid fit into the stock RX-1 tunnel? Personally if I were you Brian, I would save a couple more thousand and go straight to an Apex. I think you said you have a sled right now to ride if I remember right. The end of this season you should be able to pick up an Apex for around 6K. Would save you having to do everything to an RX-1 to make it ride good like an Apex already does. JMO

M7 vs Apex? I would choose M7 skid. I have a 1M skid and it works very well. When or if you choose the AC skid, you could go w/a 15" or 16" track. If you choose a 16" wide track you have to do a little more work getting it to fit, but it is very doable. Search the forum and you can find everything you need.

Funny thing is that part of the reason I have not yet bought an apex is the thought of immediately pulling out the skid and puting a m7 skid in there and doing another glass pack/seat doesn't appeal to me so I might as well stick with my sled.

Thanks for all the replys, I emailed RV Sports and will see what they have to say. A couple more questions...how short a track can you run on the 153? And how long can you go with the 141? I'd like the option of trying a 162, but I'm a little concerned that it might be a bit too long, especially in the tight stuff and on trails. I'll be doing some amount of trail riding as well as boondocking. I'm thinking 151 or 159 might not be bad for me. So, what I'm wondering is should I go with a 141 skid and maybe do extensions if I elect to try a 162?
Also, for those of you running 16 inch tracks, I have heard about issues with them trapping alot of snow due to the limited clearance for snow to dump out between the track and tunnel. Have you seen this as an issue?
I've been spending a bunch of time reading this thread getting a great education.

Thanks again for all the input guys.

I am running the 162" Maverick on a M7 153" skid. I started out with 141 rails on the stock 151" track and decided it wasn't enough so just went down to the Cat dealer and bought new 153" rails for around $113. You could always do this and just sell the other rails. That's actually what I was going to tell you on the 162" skid for sale on ebay too. Buy the skid, buy 153" rails for $115 and than sell the 162" rails on it now for around $75 over on Snowest. They take like 20 minutes to swap over! Really easy. My 162" Maverick rides about right in the middle of the adhustment on the rear wheels right now. Might be able to get a 159" on it, not sure? I personally don't recommend the extensions, just buy new rails and sell the others to re-coop money. Let me know if you need any help.

If you like to ride in deep powder the 162" really helps due to the extra weight on our sleds. The difference between a 159" and 162" track is negligible on trails so if you are thinking 159" you might as well go with a proven combination of the 153" skid and 162" track. If not, stay with a 151" track and 141" 1m skid.

Aaron, I was looking at that one, I just sent him a PM. Let me ask you guys a really ignorant question. When you are referring to the skid, I assume you mean the entire rear suspension, with rails, springs, linkages, shocks etc. As opposed to say the rails and the frame that secures them together. I'm not sure just what this guy is selling, he says he has the shocks, wheels and hyfax, but I don't know that this is necessarily the entire suspension.
Thanks and pls forgive my lack of knowledgs.

I was also looking at this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Used-Arc ... enameZWDVW
I'm also thinking selling the 162 rails might be easier than 141's.

Usually when you buy a skid it is "complete". When you go to buy one, just ask to make sure. Should have rails, hyfax, h arms, shocks, wheels, etc.

Aaron, where are you finding that good of a deal on new AC rails? The dealer I got a quote from (RV Sports) has them but for $96 each. I figure it shouldn't be that hard to do a trade on Snowest though.
I'm going to bid on the skid on ebay I posted above, we'll see how it goes.
