Skid Plate Fell Off....

No the skid plate. I oblongated the Skid Plate holes so removal and installation is easier. I used larger washers on the bolts. Simple. I got the idea from someone here after I found it was a pain sometimes to bend the plate back and line the holes up perfectly while trying to install the bolts.
Skid plate being the Ultra Skid Plate. So use the 25/64's bit and the homemade rivnut tool and they'll never come out. Matter of fact I bottomed out on something and the bolt head caught and bent the bolt and the rivnut back but the rivnut never camee out. I had to drill a new hole and rivnuut next to the damaged one because the hole for the rivnut was damaged(widened) bad. Lucky for me I could easily move over a good inch as there was lot's of room and free space. I also custom cut the length of the new bolts so installing was easier but not too long as to hit something up inside. You can see inside thru the openings, etc.

Thanks CC and everyone else for your help and replies.

I've got the new revnuts and 25/64" drill bit on order and the skid plate is in at the dealer. I'm ready to go!

Chester did you look at my link to the home made riv nut tool and see the pictures, etc.? The tool really helps to set the riv nut tight in the hole.
By the way it was a guy from TY ( an engineer) who told us about the longer rivnut and the depth needed.

Make sure you use a 25/64's drill bit. Make the home made RivNut tool in link above. Use Stainless steel threaded bolts'. You may have to widen the holes for the plate for lee way while installing.
Mine hold fine now for a few years. Removeing the plate for oil changes, etc. is a breeze.

CC,

I got my rivnuts from McMaster-Carr this week along with picking up my skid plate. I've read and re-read your instructions and I was wondering what the purpose of the steel plate is for? In my installation kit I got the un-threaded nut that has an end that mates to the rivnut. I'm planning on using that to tighten the rivnuts in place. Can you help me understand what the steel plate w/hole is suppose to do?

It act's like an Anvil. It forces the riv nut edges flat down. The washer along may make it uneven or not seat good.
I used a piece of flat bar I had on hand. Just make sure the metal plate is wider then the rivnut. I would think 1 1/2 in or so would work and wouldn't get in the way of anything. Also you have to put pressure on the riv nut into the hole while doing it so the Anvil ( your metal plate) is used for that.
Practice on something first you'll figure it out.

Can anyone tell me the size and length of Wellnut I will be needing to install the skid?? Might go to the hardware store today and get some.

Heelingcowboy1,

Here is what CaptCaper wrote,

I did mine this way and they have held up. You can make a home made riv nut tool to install them.
in fact there are two layers of metal to go through for a total of what I roughly measure as 5mm.. The specs for the 14.73 long AVK A-L insert(rivnut) that they send with the kit, state that the material thickness range is up to 4.2mm. What that tells me is that they are simply not long enough. So, if you wish to stick to using rivnuts, or replace your falling out rivnuts, the answer is to get the next size longer, the 17.27 long rivnut which is good for up to 6.6mm material thickness. Fits in your original hole. I ordered a package of 25, part number 94020A387, from McMaster-Carr for roughly 14 dollars plus 4 dollars shipping. Order online

HOME MADE Riv Nut Too here..http://fjr1300.info/howto/rivnut-tool.html

I order my rivnuts and drill bit from McMaster-Carr. I used the install fixture that came with the skid plate and only tighten them three (3) turns for the perfect install.

I took a 29/64ths drill bit with me to the hardware store and got some beefy wellnuts that almost lined up perfectly with the bit. They aren't very long. Got home and made the 25/64ths hole bigger with the 29/64ths bit. The well nut didn't quite fit but what I did was shaved the ends down on the wellnuts to get them started and used a rubber mallet to tap them into place so they won't come out when changing the oil. Just the screws obviously come out! When I was finished I gave a good tug on the skid plate underneath and that thing isn't going anywhere!

I used some Permatex "The Right Stuff" around them before I installed them, seen the goop squeeze out around them as I tightened them so I know I am good to go now too ;)!
