Skis - Which is better, Simmons Next Gen or Apex Mountain?

I bought a 97 Mountain Max I plan on building for my son. It needs mountain skis.

I could take my Apex mountains skis off my RX-1 (if they will fit) and put them on the Mountain Max.

If I did that I could buy a set of the new super wide Simmons Gen II for my RX-1M if they work better than the Apex Mountain skis.

My question is; do the new Simmons work better than the Apex Mountain Skis?

Those Gen II skis would give you more flotation in deep powder.

I went with the Venture TF/Viking skis on mine. I didn't like how the apex mountain skis handled on the trails and in hard packed snow.

I would love to try out those "hangar ships"
 
Go for the Simmons, take the sway bar off.
Rode all season on the Simmons II, great float, a little diff than the stock when the snow is not deep (side hill), but easy to get the hang of with a little riding time, work fine on trail.
Makes for a whole new sled.Only put stockers back on when the snow gets low to save them.
 
Simmons. i have the 05+ mountain skis on mine and am recommending simmons.
The 05s are dangerous skis, almost. On trail, they will find any existing ski track and drop into it, and you have no control over your direction.
On crusty snow, lots of darting is expected.

The 05 skis work amazing in the powder and sidehilling, but the trail and crusty snow manners that they have are really just not good
 
Glad to come across this post. I have 05 mountain skis and I agree they are very dangerous in crusty conditions. Late this winter I could not keep up with anyone while they were screaming up the lake which is over 40 miles long. The skis would dart so badly that that I almost was flung off the machine a couple of times. The skis are lined up properly and I believe it is the deep keel that is the potential killer.

I am switching to another ski for sure. I won't let my wife drive the machine when it is crusty and I am afraid when she does ride the machine fast down the lake. I can see killing myself with this set up very easily.
 
Mine dart a bit too but, I have diminished the darting a bunch by using a spacer inside the ski under the ski mount as detailed in the tech section.

My problem is I have the Holz lightweight front end kit. It's absolutely wonderful but, it makes the slide a couple inches wider than stock. In less than stellar conditions, the sled can be tought to lay over on its side.

I'm sure the control will be better but, I'm affraid with the new Simmon's ski with the runners on the outside of the skis, that the sled will feel even wider and I won't be able to lay it over at all.

You could get the front end narrowed at a welding shop. Any fabricator worth his weight should be able to do it easily. Narrow it on the inboard side of the arms by however much you want to. You would probably have to paint the inboard axel tube and maybe an inch or two of the actual arm.
I bought a set of Gen II's for my sled but I haven't tried them yet. When I sidehill lots of times my skiis aren't touching anyway in fact I prefer to sidehill using the throttle then kind of tailwhip the sled where I want it to go.

Apex Mountain skis are scary in many conditions except deep powder snow where they shine.
 
I put the 3/8 ski savers and 6" skegs on both of my rx-1 and they are not that bad at all along with the shim they dont dart and search hardly at all now.
 
I will try and shim the Apex Mountain skis, thanks Sled Dog, that should make them more predictable.

I would get the 3/8" ski savers and skegs as well from Scott Bergstrom.
