I have the chance to buy a pair of sly dog skis for my nytro. would these skis be an improvement over my stock skis with cobra head carbides right now?

which slydogs? normally they are a great ski and lots of people run them but i would stay away from the "Trail ski"

????? I've been running slydogs trail for the past 5 years on both apex's and Nytro's. Also have run pilots & CAs. Slydogs are a great ski with a 100% improvement over the Yamaha stock skis and definitely my preference over all the rest. I think you may have an issue setting up your sleds suspension & or weight transfer if you believe slydogs are a bad ski. :drink:

I hate to barge in on the thread here, but I just got a set of 7" powderhounds, and am trying to figure out which way the rubber mounts are supposed to go? tall or short side facing forward?

back to the topic, I rode a buddies 08 RTX last year and was so impressed by the change in handling I now own a set if that says anything ;)

Tall portion is on the rear (heel) side. This helps keep the the toe up. ;)!

I have Sly-Dog race skis and they are nothing special. They flex so much that you think you might break one when pulling on the loops when stuck. The skis are also longer than stock and make the bump steer worse in the Nytro since the toe change is increased with a longer ski.

If I were you, I'd just buy some Yamaha mountain sled bottoms and transfer your skags and handles. The added width will be an improvement and stock skis have less steering effort than aftermarket skis. This will be the least expensive route for new parts.

TotallyNytro this is what I am referring to, the "Trail ski" is a thinner less durable version of the race ski and tends to not like the heavier sleds such as our Nytro's. with that being said I find the factory skis to do just fine. i run 9" shaper bars and a Zbros +1 43" front end.

We have the slydog trail on both our Rages and are very happy.
Upon rerceiving the skis my thoughts were the keels would wear quickly so I made my own ski savers from 1/8"or 3/16" x 1 1/4" x ?? flat metal. This does stiffen the ski, but with no ill effects.
We had some darting so tacked 1/8" x 1/2" flat on one side of the ski saver and eliminated all darting. Guess this acts somewhat like a dually. Even when this 1/2" flat wears to almost nothing ( way below the 6" carbide ) we still don't have any darting.
I'm an expermenter so have welded alot on my savers mostly for wear and to strengthen, but what I said above is all that is needed.
With around 7000 miles on skis they are like new.

I'm working on something similar using metal for my Slydogs. Previously I have used teflon and made ski savers which helped a lot but they only last for one season. The nice thing with the teflon though is that I could shape them to fit in the groove of the ski and then make a groove for the carbide to sit in. It looks like you made your ski savers a bit wider in the front with a lip turned down slightly - is that correct? Also, what tyoe of metal have you used?

I just removed my slydog trail skis to switch out to Curve XS with the LE. These skis are the bomb, it's a 100% improvement over the dogs.Curves are probably the best mod i've ever done with my Nytro or any sled.

I got a new set of Slydog 8" PH's and they are quite a bit beefier (deeper and wider keel and deeper profile at the front, and overall looks heavier duty) than the 7" PH's so I'm looking forward to trying them this weekend.

I have a set of Trail Hounds with a set of Bergstroms Single 6" Good n' Ugly carbides and the difference over the stock skis is like night and day. It steers so well now that it wants to throw me off all the time instead of just pushing in the corners. The Bergstroms came with their own ski plastic savers and so far, after about 1000 Km, everything still looks like new. It still darts quite a bit, especially with the icy conditions we now have so I would recommend something better. A lot of guys swear by the Triple Points and I'll probably get those for next season.
