To quote Rodney Dangerfield, "I resemble that remark".What is really fun is standing up looking backwards in reverse with it and it engages throwing you out over the windshield pinning the throttle with your thigh.......
Ask me how I know, And I was running 12#'s of boost at the time (with quick spool waste gate) Thank god I had the tether attached and no one was around to laugh!!
I have done the same thing trying to reverse, thigh hitting the throttle I was just about over the bars.
Now only seated reverse thank you lol

I got a second wind tonight and wrapped up a few things on the viper including installing the soft start spring. It took all the jerk out of starting from a stop. The stock Yamaha spring was borderline dangerous on my sled especially when trailer loading since it would lurch ahead engaging in the 3500rpm range and you have to really jump on the brake or hold and try to control. It was manageable but not at all what I would expect especially from a new sled.
With the BOP soft start spring installed the clutch engages at about 2600 rpm and is smooth and easy. This is in comparison to moving around on the trailer last season which was the worse scenario for the jumpy starts. This will make sledding on the Viper much more enjoyable. I can recall last year trying to come out of a steep ditch to cross a busy highway and it would either launch which shot me out into the road or spun the track and I lost traction and had to abandon the crossing with cars coming. I never had the jerky start, always smooth on my SXR which my son now rides. I can instantly tell the difference in controlled smooth low rpm engagement with the soft start spring. There may be some reason Yamaha thought folks want a high rpm jerky start up engagement but I'm lost on that one.
THANKS for the awesome recommendation. Thanks BOP Soft Start Spring Highly recommended.
Yep, I really like the soft start spring and as it seems to be same finishing rate as GWG I couldn't be happier. Glad it took that jump out for you.

I do believe we should start a petition for Yamaha to add 1 more large sticker to the tank area of the sled "WARNING STIFF ENGAGMENT SPRING REMAIN SEATED WITH HELMET APPLIED DURING ALL REVERSING MANUEVERS" or maybe just "SIT DOWN YOU IDIOT"

I too did that, was backing into an enclosed trailer and hit the throttle with my leg as I stood up and looked back on a 280 horsepower Nytro. Managed to jump just before the bumper hit the trailer front wall...................

Maybe I should share some of the other bone head things I've done on here and others will chime in to let me know its normal?

Start a new thread I like the idea "Did I really do THAT?"

Back on point no one I know of has tried the soft start spring and not liked it and at 30 bucks why not? Please note I paid for both my springs so I have no incentive to push this product.

I got a chance to run around in the back yard today with about 5 inches of snow on the ground. The soft start spring makes getting on/off the trailer a breeze now and start from a dead stop smooth and the jerky launch is gone. I also have installed the float adjust on my secondary (adjusted to squeal a bit and backed off, belt almost even with secondary housing) as well as adjusting my chain tension (2.5 from about 4 turns out). So all those things were done, and the viper takoffs are smooth as can be. As long as overall performance does not suffer (hard to tell running around on 1 acre) I'll be very happy. I'm pretty sure the soft start spring was the big difference in the smooth takeoffs.
I also put real carbides on the sled(dual 6") and it actually steers now, but ran on some pretty loose snow and I didn't' want to tear my yard (added 90 studs too) up so I'll have to get on the trails when they open and check out the handling. For now I'm core aerating the yard. I also added the J&T 4th wheel kit and that checked out fine too. I'm sure I have some dialing in to do yet but it was fun getting out if only in the back 1 acre and glad things worked out.

I'd really like to know if any other performance suffers as the hard starts makes laps with my lil guy less enjoyable.

Yeah it's tough with the stock spring and jerky starts, it sucks having to circle around all the time to pick up your passenger............I'd really like to know if any other performance suffers as the hard starts makes laps with my lil guy less enjoyable.

I have used it in 3 different Vipers and have only had good experiences and no power loss I can tell

Before you remove the cover take a marker and mark the cover and sliding sheave with an x on one of the lobes which contain the sets of two bolts. There are internal marks cast into each piece but its easier to just mark outside if you are not familiar with where the "x" marks are cast into the two pieces.
It is as simple as just removing the 6 screws, swapping the spring, and then re installing the cover.
Reinstall the clutch cover make sure you line up the x on the cover with the x on the clutch (balance) and install cover(torque the 6 bolts@ 10ft/lb)

Hey fellas. Have a 2016 Viper MTX 141se and hate how jumpy it is. Brutal. Does anybody know if there is a Yamaha primary spring that will fix this? Would be so much easier and quicker to grab one from a dealer here rather than ordering the soft start spring from the USA since I am in Canada.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Anyone know if there will be any issues using BoP soft start spring with Thunder Products Big Venom Clutch kit? Plug and play or do I need to modify my weights?

Many people use the orange pink orange primary spring. Part number 90501-601l8-00. Makes it a softer engagement.
