Splined socket size for Apex/Attak jackshaft?

Anybody know the proper splined socket size for the jackshaft on the Apex/Attak? I am talking the splined shaft that the secondary clutch sits on. I am assuming it has to be like a 17 or 19mm?

Any idea if a standard metric splined socket will definitely fit? Like one pictured below.

If its 1" then its the only standard bolt on the entire sled.

Im pretty sure its a 17mm and the bolt is aluminium.

Your talking about this bolt correct.

Ok...quite a difference of opinion with a 1" and a 17mm. Anyone else who is 100% sure of the size rather than a guess?

I agree..I doubt it is 1" as it more than likely a metric size.[/i]

No, not the bolt. that is a 14mm bolt to hold the secondary on. Looking at the splined shaft when the secondary clutch is removed.
 
K&L speciality tools,Who makes the speciality tools for Yamaha. 1-800-708-3184. It is called secondary shaft holder #YS-01492 Yamaha # or KL-0210F KL tools # I took those numbers off my holder. Hope that is what you are looking for. Butch
 
If you are thinking of using the splined socket to hold the secondary so you can remove the upper nut on the chain case another alternative is to throw a wrench on the hex drive shaft, works great and I already have a 1 1/16" open ended wrench to fit over the drive shaft.

Thanks Butch. I know a couple companies make the holders and specialty 36mm deep sockets for the large nut on the top gear

But trying to find out if anyone has experience using a splined socket (S&K, Snap On, Craftsman, Matco, etc.....) and if they will fit the splined jackshaft.

That is what I was thinking. I usually jam a pry bar in the secondary, which I don't think is the best method. But w/ the method you mentioned, obviously chain is in place. Isn't this a lot of undue stress being put on the chain? Wrench on drive shaft, drive shaft attached to lower gear, chain connects lower gear to upper gear...so all that torque (to loosen or tighten the 36mm upper gear nut) is being transferred through the chain, no?

For the amount of torque were applying to remove/tigthen that nut the chain drive assembly can handle it no problem.

There is a lot of stress on the chain. On a stock sled the chain is fine but on boosted I stretch my chain out past the limits in less then 2 years or around 2000 miles.

I used the MPI socket set to fit the splined shaft, I dont think a standard socket will work.

Thanks, Kinger. Since you have the tool, can you confirm how many splines (points) it has? most conventional splined sockets and sets seem to have 12 splines, which I am not sure will work. Was just trying to see if I could spend $5 on a splined socket versus over $50 on the set MPI or others are offering.

I guess the "stress on the chain" scenario makes sense, (if putting the wrench on drive shaft)...under a lot of stress under load of the engine anyhow.
 
I usually slip the rotor back on just so it catches the key then i slip the caliper on and place a 2x6 lengthwise between the caliper and the bulkhead and squeeze the brake and tie it tight with a strap and then the whole thing locks up to remove and or tighten the nut on the top gear.i just use an open end wrench or a set of channel locks to do it from the bottom whil laying down and looking up. I'm sure there is 3 or 4 other ways to make it happen too. Good luck
