Okay guys I bought one of these SPOTs and used it on a fishing trip. I bought it from Cabelas mail order catalog and rec'd the unit on the day I left for Canada.
Right off the bat I had a problem. I could not register the unit on their website due to a flaw from the factory. The unit has a 7 digit number that is located in the battery compartment. That 7 digit number is needed for registration. My unit only came with a 6 digit number
. The operators at SPOT suggested I send the unit back where I bought it from and ask for a replacement unit. I was highly disapointed. I then decided to look on the box and low and behold the same number was listed on the box except this number had 7 digits. After about a half an hour I was registered and my contacts listed.
I signed up for the basic package along with the emergency insurance. I didn't sign up for the track feature.
All in all this unit did what it was advertized to do. Sometimes it would take the unit 3 min. to send the message (U.S. hwy.) and sometimes it would take up to 15 min.(Ontario backwater lakes). I never needed the 911 or help message button so I can't report to you guys the outcome of those features but the I'm Okay feature was sent everytime to all the e-mails and phone contacts that I had listed on my account. I sent messages from west Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia, Penn., New York, and Ontario Canada.
I'm satisfied with my purchase.
