...after lunch went to start sled, smoke coming out of cowling (removed), found loose screw on ground of battery terminal, tightened screw down, sled hesitated to start, tapped starter relay & sled fired up. Then stopped in trail after 5 miles, & sled would not start back up...

...towed in by a Ski Doo, with all the laughter of the Ski Doo guys echoing

Where we are with it...

When key is turned, you hear fuel pump engage. FUEL PUMP RELAY - Good. Goto crank motor & NOTHING

Tested battery - Good
Battery under load - Good

Checked starter relay - Good
by pass relay, - still no start
tried new starter relay - no start

Main Fuse 40A for sled - Good (swapped with known good one anyway)
Ignition fuse - Good (swapped with known good one anyway)

I am thinking Starter...What is the best route? Any suggestions out there?

How do you get to the front motor mount bolts?

Suggestions?

I see this ty4stroke topic:

RX1MPete writes:

All you need to do is take off the two airbox bolts out, drain oil and take filter off. Get at the two front motor mount bolts and remove them. He had his sled lifted up on the front bumper with a come along. Then he put a piece of wood under the engine block, lowered the sled onto the block and the engine tipped back and he removed the starter and replaced it with the new one. Lift up on come along to line up motor mount bolts and put oil in it. No need to remove steering shafts and airbox or have two people

...others talk about taking out rear mounting bolt, after removing air box, seat, tank, flex hears?

What I have NOT tried...

(Doubt these are the issues)

Load Control relay?
Regulator/Rectifier? (how do you test)
Stator? (where is the lead to test this?) Service manual shows should read between .22 - .26 ohms @ 68 degrees

Preventative maintenance to include battery quick connectors & LED alert on starter relay

Check the battery voltage as you are trying to start it. If the starter has good connection the voltage should drop. Might just be a bad connection on the starter or ground.

First check the ground on engine , then take a test light and on starter side of relay see if you have power when you turn the key to start , if you do then put test light down on starter and see if you have power to that if so then starter is bad !

Have voltage right at the starter, pretty confident after troubleshooting, it is seized!

Anyone do one of these recently on an 08 Nytro...Best Method ???

Ola,
This should help out and give you what you need.
I just replaced 2 starters in my 08' Nytro since January due to faulty wiring of my gauges.

I learned it helps to have a friend or understanding wife present when you have to drop the starter out of the sled.

Good luck.

That's a nice write up ! ;)!

trying Kope!

Kope, Thanks a lot man! Seriously, if you haven't changed one of these out...you don't know what you're in for. But good contribution here...much appreciated

this is where I am at...

I have mine all apart, covers, belly, hood, steering, radiator, air box, (just to get to front engine mount bolts - same as you, '08 Nytro, have a rope through the the holes on front of the motor tilting it back about 1/2 inch and it is stopped by the exhaust shield, We have pried, jack, lifted, etc...can't get anymore play out of it... thing has been kicking my #*$&@ for about 6 hours now.

I see you wrote loosen the rear mounts...I haven't done that, did you have to remove seat, gas tank, anything else, to get more play to drop that *&%*ng starter !!

Here is a video of manual starting Nytro with Skidoo rope. Of course the Skidoo guys are bashing the Yamaha. Anyway may avoid a tow and bashing.

Pete
That's a Phazer. You could never pull start a Nytro
trust me you can rope start a nytro , I had to do it after my one way starter clutch failed.

Impressive. So, how does that work? 10ft rope wrapped on the primary 6 times, leave slack, tie a loop around your waist and then run as fast as you can? I'll have to try this lol

It works like this, 4 wraps around the clutch (not sure of the overall rope length) a 6" long 1/2 drive extension for handle and give her a rip. Starts the first pull. BTW the sled is supercharged so a little more added drag turning the charger.

I guess I'll have to try that. What about when its cold? Ironically I've had to pull start a phazer with a ratchet strap when the starter clocked itself, luckily it was still a bit warm. Figured the Nytro would just be a bitch, but if it actually works, that's a great thing to know

Starter

Larmac,
I would detach the rear mounts also
(make sure to spin the threaded bushing out of all 4 mounts too, this will give you more play as well - use a large blade screwdriver).

No need to remove the other stuff you mentioned.

By doing this you gain vertical as well as horizon play in moving the motor around in the engine cradle. I used both a 2x4 and large crow bar on the bottom of the motor (make sure to position both on the outside edges and use the reinforced areas on the block as leverage points).

While lifting the motor, spin the starter so the hot lead bolt is away from your tunnel cooler,
Pull it down and towards the clutch side of your engine.

Starter will drop out on you so be careful if you below the sled.

Reinstall using the same methods.

PS: put a dab of grease on the end of the starter's gear/shaft before you install it into the motor.

Hope that helps!

Kope
