I have a starter noise while cranking. The starter is currently working however from what I read in my search its probably on its way out. I can't see rolling the dice on a questionable starter. I think having it rebuilt would be the route to go buying a new one is out of the question. Looking for ideas thanks in advance

Change it before you are stuck with out it. Kimpex has a starter that is half price of OEM but I find you get what you pay for.

Can the OEM be rebuilt?

Yamaha offers a brush kit. Other than that you would need to match up the bushings at a starter rebuild place. If its the armature I'm sure you could find someone to rebuild that as well.
I willing to bet after all that a new starter might be cheaper.
