Hey everyone,
Just purchased a 04' RX1 and I had an intermittant starter or starter relay problem. On occassion when I went to start it it would just click. let it sit overnight or move and tap the relay it would work. Now after I've been doing just normal maintenance and putting it back together I only get the "Click", can't tap it or move wires to get it to start.

I hate playing the game of replacing parts to see if they're bad, but I have no idea on how to use a meter on anything (I do own one however), my electrical skills are non existant. I think the relays run around $50. Any guidence on how to set the meter to test the outgoing side of the relay when I turn the switch to start would be greatly appreciated!!! Pictures are always worth a thousand words if you have a meter and can show me the settings......

I really need to take some electrical classes of some sort, diagnosing electrical is always my stumbling area. If I knew the basics I wouldn't need a dealership at all....

Thanks

You should be able to find a free download for a service manual for your sled. In there, there are very good instructions on how to test the electrical, diagrams and all.

You could also see if there are any identical relays on your sled and swap them around to test the theory that it's a bad relay or not.

Figured it out....sort of.

So, I bypassed the relay and the starter engaged, thought to myself...bad relay. Then I was told don't jump to conclusions and check the voltage of the battery with a meter (After all the relay is $60). I laughed (inside laugh) because after all I bypassed the relay and it worked right? I did it anyway....8.5 volt reading! Hooked up a trickle charger with 2amps and you guessed it...it started.

Honestly I'm still a bit confused. The conclusion for me is the relay may take just a little more juice to activate it then what it takes the starter to engage, even if you here the click that doesn't mean it's working. Either way 8.5 volts at the battery would appear to be the route cause.

Could all go south tommorrow when I go out there and get another CLICK sound after charging it but at least I'll have a few hours of sanity...lol
