I went to start my sled and the battery was dead i have a charger on it to try to get it to start it turns over and starts when i turn the key but dies the second i let go of key can a dead battery cause this or do i have other issues
Low battery can cause this. I would charge for 24 hours and try again. If no luck, test the battery.

The battery in my 2011 Apex gave me fits last season. I had the original battery in my '06 Attak and it's still going strong. Not quite sure what happened on my new sled, but it would not keep a charge. Put the Optimate on it when brand new, and several times during the year, as well as at the end of the year. It went dead in February, and then again during my summerization.
The charger wouldn't even recover it. My dealer gave me a new one under warranty. Hopefully I'll have the same success with this one as I did with my Attak.

Thanks i,ve charged 24 hrs and nothing happens when i turn the key i just was hoping it is just the battery which i will replace when i change out my bushings seeing that its a project taking out the battery we already did it in my buddies attaksleddog66 said:Low battery can cause this. You should be able to do an initial test on the battery through the jumper leads.....unless there is a connection problem right at the battery. What sled is this??harpo said:Thanks i,ve charged 24 hrs and nothing happens when i turn the key i just was hoping it is just the battery which i will replace when i change out my bushings seeing that its a project taking out the battery we already did it in my buddies attaksleddog66 said:Low battery can cause this. Seems to me the headlights come on the minute you release the key. Battery no suficiently charged would explain the motor dieing! I drained my battery down to nothing and it would not take a charge. Took the optimate 3 over 36 hours to desulfate and charge the battery.
Now I've been told the battery has lost a huge amount of its life because of th

I appreciate the offer but if i'm going through the process im just going to install a brand new battery while i have it apart so i don't have to deal with it again and this time i'll use a battery tender on it and start it aonce a month

Interesting thing about new batteries from Yamaha....the kind that you have to add the electrolyte yourself, it says you shouldn't add it and charge it until you're ready to use the machine.
This may explain why I had such good luck out of my '06 Attak. I bought that sled literally on the trail and it was set up right then and there. My '11 was prepped a month prior to my delivery and then it sat another 2 1/2 months prior to its first use. I did have the Optimate on it during that down time, but it still gave me fits; eventually losing all charge.
So, my new battery is still in the box with my sled torn apart.....waiting until I can use the machine right away.

When I bought my 05 warrior I got it as soon as possible, and it sat for months until the snow came. I had a trickle charger on the battery whenever the sled was not in use, and I sold the sled this spring with the original battery.
I wouldn't worry about waiting unitl ready to ride to activate the battery, just keep the charger on it.
Sounds like you just had a bad battery.
