At 700 miles my upper and lower steering post bushings are SHOT! A worn upper bushing gives you play forward and back, a worn lower gives you slop when you try and turn the bars, about 3/4" in my case. The post is exactly 1.000" and the bushings are anywhere from 1.030-1.040 worn. The upper one is no biggie, but to change the lower the fuel tank has to come out. I will say my Apex is a mountain and I do alot of boondocking so I'm often hanging off the mountain strap and with the tall riser I'm sure it puts alot of force on those bushings.
I know others have had this problem.....Is yamaha covering it yet? If so, I'll just wait and add it to my list
