I've been reading a lot on here about all the slop in the Phazer's steering system.
I myself have quite a bit on my sled, however I have always just managed to deal with it through ski alignments and riding adjustments. Next summer, I want to tackle that beotch, are there any suggestions as to how I go about doing this?
I don't have the skill level to disassemble the whole sled. I cannot take out the engine, but removing the airbox, gas tank and subframe are all things I have done. I do have the service manual in PDF files on my PC.

I also don't quite understand the ovalling of the ski mounts.
I have Slydog trail hounds on my sled, the bolt they came with fits into the hole on my spindles quite nicely. When I jack up the front end and pull on the ski laterally and vertically there is very little movement, so then how would it oval unless the bolt you used was too small or the bushing in the spindle is too soft or worn...or is that the problem people are having.

Yes that is exactly the spindle problem people have. There is some real nice how to's on steering slop and it takes a combination of all of them to get it right.Absolutely necessary? No. The slop really isnt noticed much when riding. But the wear only gets worse.

Yep definately worth the extra money if you're going to do Bushmans spacer mod on the steering quad do the oil lites and spindle bushing mods. For an extra few bucks you won't regret it..

Bushmans steering and spindle kit really tightend my steering up! Great guy to work with too.

I agree!

Are you referring to the spindle kit? UP Bushman has 2 kits.

The oilite bushings are for the A-arms and are available from a couple aftermarket places (Ulmer's is one) and Yamaha also carries them now. they replace the stock plastic bushings. There is also the steering block from OFT which helps with up and down movement in the steering.
The tierod ends and ball joints can also cause slop. Some of the balljoints were faulty early on - Yamaha replaced mine under warranty and the new set has lasted good.
