Did you replce the right relay and was it oem or aftermarket from auto store. Did you check the back of the ignition for corrosion.

I bought the relay from the Yamaha dealer oem part. I did unplug the ignition switch at the harness & cleaned it with contact cleaner, but there was no corrosion there anyways. Thanks!!

I just wanted to ask because my buddy installed a aftermarket relay and it was the wrong one. I was a relay but not for the starter. Check all the connections to the relays for corrosion and make sure there are know bare wires rubbing anywhere.

Make sure the ignition fuse in the fuse box is good. If it's OK then you'll need to check the starter relay control voltage. The relay has three wires in the connector on top. The red/white and blue/white wires are the control wires. The red/wh supplies battery power from the kill switch and the blue/wh is the ground signal from the key switch while in the crank position. measure the voltage across the two while holding the key in the crank position. If you don't read 12-13 volts then measure from the battery ground to the red/wh (kill switch up), you should read 12-13 volts. Then measure across the battery positive and the blue/wh with the key in the crank position, you should read 12-13 volts.

When you turn the key does the fuel pump start? If not maybe the ignition switch needs to be cleaned/replaced.

don't forget to check the harness behind the primary. If you haven't moved it or removed the casting nub, you'll have a problen eventually, garanteed!!

sled won't start
Thanks for all the responses!!! Well i didn't try jumping the new relay,i will tonight. I tried to check behind the primary to see if the wires were rubbing, but i can't see to good behind there. I guess i will have to get a puller & pull the primary off to see better. When i turn the key on the dash lights come on the fuel pump is working, eveything still operates the same when it was starting, just doesn't start. I will check the voltages on the relay tonight aswell. Thanks again guys!!!! Art
ps: I did notice on the new relay the fuses that came in the relay were 10amps & the ones in the old relay were 20amps. But they look identical other than that.

No need to pull the primary, just get a good flashlight and you can see the black harness. If it's touching the block you can just about be assured it's worn!!!

If you jump across the relay with the key in the on position and the engine starts then all your problems are in the starter circuit. The fuses on top of the relay are not for cranking the engine and have nothing to do with the starter circuit. One is a spare and the other supplies power to the fuel injection system. Make sure you install the proper fuse for the system. If you don't have a meter for measuring voltage a 12 volt test light will work.
