After being in bed all week with the flu & reading every single post while SAB1 was texting me pics of MY trails, i finally got out to the garage to compare the stock springs to the Thunder Product Orange springs.
I took every measurement i could including weighing them. I know , i know what does weighing them do? NOTHING, except i have a cool new digital pocket scale for my weights & so far i've weighed everything in the house.....a penny, an acorn, a condomn. PM me if you need to know any of these...
Here it is....
PRIMARY: Stock (gold,pink,gold)
-weight=172grams
-length=114mm (unsprung)
-wire=5.5mm
-#of coils=5 & 3/4
-compression=265 pounds (i did this with scale until coils touched)
PRIMARY: Thunder Products Orange
-weight=142grams
-length=88.36mm
-wire=5.84mm
-# of coils 4 1/2
-compression=280 PLUS (i could not squish this the whole way) 290 to 300 is my guess
SECONDARY: Stock (yellow)
-weight=251grams
-length=77.5mm
-wire=6.1mm
-# of coils=5 1/2
-compression=105 pounds
SECONDARY: Thunder Products Orange
-weight= 167grams
-length=87.45mm
-wire=5.7mm
-# of coils=4 1/2
-compression=138 pounds
Now for the tension on the secondaries. Unfortunately i didn't have a scale while guard was off & the digital scale i bought moves too much. So back to Cabela's for a better than average scale; I'll use FOURLOAD's data on the TP spring.
SECONDARY: Thunderv Products Orange spring per FOURLOAD
60 degrees=22 lbs
50 degrees=18 lbs
40 degrees=14 lbs
SECONDARY: Stock Yellow (with TP 33/35 helix)
60 degrees=18 lbs
50 degrees=16.5 lbs
I'll try a few more pulls with stock helix & different degrees & one with shims behind helix.
That's all i had in the tank boys.
BTW: A penny weighs 38.6 grams which is 18 grams LIGHTER than a condomn.....who knew!

Mr OCD, Can you do the spring compression test one more time. Everybody knows spring compression is measured lbs per inch! Coils touching! Jeesh! Just kidding, great work. Thanks for the info..... I never knew the weight of a condom. Not sure that will ever come in handy, but who the hell knows! Lol

Compression was tough. I put the springs between 2 pieces of 2 by 4's then reset my digital scale bought just for weighing sleds. I had to stand on the board while trying to watch the coils & scale. I had no idea they were this stiff. Don't forget i only weigh 162 right now.
I actually started coughing & slipped off & the spring flew across the garage into the neighbors yard. It was 60 yards away!
Then i started laughing & started coughing again! Then i thought "why the hell am i doing this?''.
Because this is how i learn. Someday there will be a thread & i'll chime in with "you know it takes over 280 pounds to compress an Orange TP spring'', then all the newcomers will think i'm smart...

My stock Secondary spring is all black, not yellow?? I had dealer put in Dalton Black Orange Secondary spring before I even rode it. He gave me the stock Helix and Secondary back...and the stock Secondary he gave back to me is all black. No yellow spring here.

Hate to say it Steve, but to push a spring till coil bind is WORTHLESS DATA. You wasted your time here pal.
To test a spring you need a drill press or spring tester and measure springs at a installed height and then measures at a full shift out height. These are measurements the factory or aftermarket uses and can be found in their publications. The measurement readings are taken at is also very critical. All must be measured at EXACTLY the same heights on a good scale.
To compound things, driven torsion springs also measure twist as well as compression.

I don't know about that Mike. I can just look at a spring and know how stiff it is. Maybe I just have a good eye?
