stock vector performance issues

If you don't have the 3 bolts in the back of your secondary clutch there is no spacing to run the Yamaha belt. No wonder it squeals You have to have the bolts in and use washers to adjust the spacing of the belt.

Your dealer mechanic must be an idiot if he didn't notice any bolts at the back of the secondary. The bolts/spacers are the first thing you check especially when your belt squeals. I knew something wasn't making any sense.

I'm also in Alaska. When I bought my Vector this past December my dealer installed an RX-1 primary clutch. I don't know if there is any difference but I have not had a single belt problem in over 1100 miles. At the time I asked him about the clutch rattle issue and he said if the update is done to the clutch to eliminate the rattle, it will cause it to bind when it gets hot. Did your sled have the update done?

Another mod that isn't for everyone is to remove the plastic close off shouds on either side of the tank. I did this because I run Wildchild's steering post relocation kit and it looks bad witht he stock tank shroud. Before the removal I had belt dust built up arond the clutches. Since taking them off, I don't notice any belt dust. The belt and clutches are running cooler.

the updates are done and I still can not use the yamaha belt with the belt deflection properly adjusted. I am staying with the Carlile belt It does pull harder with it vs the yamaha belt and I still have not had a problem with the carlile belt. Belt anc clutches still get hot too hot but better than before. I think that I may be done this year so next year I will get the new carlile extreme xs I plan to get a roller secondary too.

I am still not acheiving the rpms I would like to see.

Right now it has performed the best it ever has and I dont think I could go back to a 2 stroke

I think the clutch update is causing you part of the problem. The way it was explained to me is that the update tightens up the tolerences in the clutch to eliminate the annoying rattle at idle. All clutches have this rattle, its just the Vector is quiet enough to hear it. When the updated clutch gets hot, everything expands and the already tight tolerences get even tighter causing the bind.

Something else to think about is your clutch kit may be designed for much higher elevations than what we normally ride here in AK. Both my dealer and buddy's agree that the vast majority of pipes, clutch kits, etc (regardless of what brand sled they're fitted on) do not work as advertised in Alaska. They almost always have to be custom tuned for our locale and shitty pump gas.

Where are you riding at? Sounds like in the interior, around Fairbanks?

the belt problem was there before the update and I never heard a rattle
so I don't think it is that. I ride mostly pville and eureka. and I am back to stock setup outside the helix and 14.5mm rollers. stock weights with 10.3 alum rivets both holes and 20-40 gearing

Like I said since day 1 this sled would just shred yamaha belts. too much heat under the hood just going to add somevents next year

If you never heard a rattle then it probly DOES in fact have the update done. Thye probly did it before you bought the sled or it came this way in the dealer set up. Most all these sleds had the infamous clutch rattle and if you didn't then I'd wonder why ? From day one it sounded just like what he was saying, a misalignment or a binding going on some how. Several of us said that. I know others with that sled and they have know issue's and ride them HARD for hours upon hours in the mountains ! I think the idea for vents is a good one but not the root of the problem! I bet if you switched with an 06' clutch it would change the way it behaves and solve some of the heat issue's , it's worth a try if you have a friend or access to someone who'll lend you one for the day. This might solve your problem and open a new window for performance, you could be loosing a bit now if in fact it is binding a slight amount....... ? Also something to think about the majority of us online don't know of the riding area's you mention, so if you stipulate if it's steep and deep or what ever the terrain might be, someone else with a Vector might be able to lend some more insight ? just a thought .

I've ridden at Eureka and it's at about 3000', dry snow, and you can ride mountains, trails or powder. Great place to go! I've never been to Petersville, but the snow is probably very similar...dry.

Definitly check the clutch alignment. I bet that is where most of the problem lies. Misalighned clutches will shred belts regardless of clutch set-up. If your dealer isn't doing a good job, take it to another one. Better yet, align them yourself. Then you know its done right.

The belt and clutches will get hot with all the shrouds in place. Like I mentioned before, remove the plastic shroud on the clutch side, it won't look as nice as stock, but it really helps for venting.

The good thing is that your problem is not an inherent design flaw with the Vector. I've run mine in a 130+ mile XC race for over 3.5 hrs at wide open throttle for miles on end and had no belt problems. I also ride my sled in the powder and in the mountains on glaciers in Valdez and have had no belt failures.

My opinion is that the problem lies in misalighnment #1, clutch update #2, and excessive belt heat #3. Let us know what you find.
