Stock VK ski width

I read in a few places some of the Mountain guys are using the VK ski's on the Apex Mnt. and I'm wondering how wide the stock VK ski's are and how far does the center keel drop down? The stock Mnt. ski has a deep keel and is 7" wide, I'd like to find something aorund the 8-8.5" wide ski with a deep keel for positive steering in the powder. Thanks Mike

11" skins

I was wondering, do you have the 11" skins and if so, do you like them? Or notice a big difference? When I bought my Pro last year, I asked about them and the dealer told me I wouldn't need them. I have had a few times when wider ski's would have sure been nice.

Thanks.

Tony

I attempted to order these skins for my '08 VK last winter. I could not find a canadian dealer to respond and US dealers cannot get them. Anyone know how I can get a pair?

11" ski skins

I just put the 11" skins on our VK Pro. They are a lot harder to turn but they float in powder like crazy. I cannot turn the skis at all at a standstill unless I'm on ice. With just me on the machine, the ski imprint on the snow is the same depth as that of the track which to me means that the front end is up high on the snow where it should be. Last winter I had a couple occasions where the stock 7" skis hit a soft spot in powder and sank out of sight.

The 11" skins have been darting and following other peoples tracks more than the stock skis but I think that is adjustments rather than the ski itself. I adjusted the toe out this afternoon and will try it out this coming week.

The total profile of the 11" skins is about 1-1/2" vertical from the carbide to the outer edge of the skin.

If you want to order the skins, try phoning Nolan at 250-692-3777 and ask him if he is willing to ship them to the US. No harm in asking. There must be a lot of Canadian dealers who would be interested in shipping to the US.

Do you know if they make the 9" skins and would you be willing to take a picture of yours from the side maybe? Thanks Mike

11" skins installed

I installed 11' skins the other day and rode around my yard and neighborhood. Wow, I have to say, so far, I am impressed. I will be taking it out next weekend for a long run for the real test but so far, in 3' of powder, what a difference.

I had to get them in Canada from a friend of mine since we don't seem to sell them in the US, and I also installed 6" dual scags and it seems to be a good fit. I'll update after my ride next weekend.

I can understand using the wide ski-skins for regular flotation, but don't they make it even worse to pull over in the snow, not to talk about side-hilling???

I found on my old '98 Skandic WT, I had to remove the wide skins, to make it more agile in the deep snow, and steer better in the fluff... With the wide skins, my WT would hold the nose above the snow, but the rear was much deeper in the snow. It felt like I was going uphill all the time. When I removed them, it would float much more level, and actually I could make it up all the small hills in one go, where I had problems before. The wide skins made the hill even steeper, since the nose went for the sky, and the rear dug down. I was amazed by the difference, since everybody had allways told me the wide skins were the better choice...

The RS Viking might need them though, since it's quite a bit heavier then my old WT... I'm just curious how it compares. Do you ride any hills, or is it more or less flat, with not much sidehilling-ability needed?

Thank's for the link! I find the new Simmons very interesting. It's almost like bolting two surfboards up front...

However, I ride a widetracked sled quite different then an RX-1. It'll be interesting to see how air19's RS Viking will perform, if he chooses to change to the Simmons Gen2 ski's.

I had a '00 Polaris WT which had 10" skis on it. I thought is was a heavy sled until I bought the VK last winter. The Polaris was much easier to boondock but I do love the VK for grunt and easy 70 mph cruising on the ITS trails. The Polaris was working to maintain 50 mph. The VK is also much better on gas when working or cruising.

I considered the 11" Yamaha skins and nearly ordered them until I realized they were $144 per pair. I would put double carbides on for another $160 or so...total $300. For another $150 I could get the 10" Simmons that I believe would be much better that the skin option. I have Simmons Gen 1 on a '04 Switchback and they are a really nice ski...absolutely no darting.

just a quick update

I took out my sled today for just a bit since we have received some new snow. We now have about 3' of powder in most areas. With the skins, I have noticeably improved flotation in the powder which is a good improvement over the stock ski's. with the 6" dual carbides on the packed trail and roads it handles extremely well with no sliding like before. I have yet to take it out on a main run though so that will have to wait until next weekend.

As for hill riding, I do ride some but most of my riding is breaking trails, hunting and just trail riding. With the heavier VK Pro, I really think the stock ski's are a bit too small.

For me in the US spending $220 was a good investment over the $450 I would have to spend for the Simmons.

I may a different report after next weekend but for now, I am pleased...
