What do you think about the following for prepping the engine for long term storage (5-7 months): To run a pre-mix of 2-stroke oil and gas(20:1 mix?) in the 4-stroke engine which should act as "fogging" of the internals.

I seen this mentioned on a motorcycle website and am curious as it would be alot easier to do than trying to "fog" 4 cylinders on the sleds.

The person who mentioned he has done this in his fuel-injected 4 cyl. Yamaha cycle says no harm will be done.
 

I wouldnt. Id just use fogging oil. If that method works so good for storage, why do people with 2-stroke sleds fog their motors?
Id do it like Yamaha says: add Sta-bil to the gas and fog the motor.

I was thinking by running some pre-mix in the engine would alleviate the manual "fogging" procedure, and or pulling out the spark plugs to put some oil in the cylinders.

I had come across this info elsewhere and in theary it sounds good. But then again, I haven't had any issues with what I've done in the past either.
 
when it comes to computerized fuel injected engines i wouldnt put any thing in the tank the manufacturer dosent say to.i have done nothing except grease the suspension and change the oil&filter on my 03 rx1 prior to to the spring.i just started it up the other day after a little cranking it started and ran fine.
 
I don't think that adding 2 cycle oil to the gas is a good idea with this new fuel injection. I personaly think the very best method is to start the sled every few weeks if you can. Let it warm up to full operating temp. This is very important to keep moisture out. Don't just start it and than shut it back off. Also lift the back up and rev it up a few times to let all the drivetrain parts rotate around. Also loosen up the track when in storage. I know alot of people do not agree with this but I have been doing this on my sleds since I was a kid with never one problem ever.

I do the same as Slush Monster except the loosening of the track. Only thing I do additionally is point a hose at the track while it on a stand and run it. This way you have water hitting the front exchanger and can run the motor for longer periods of time.
 
The owner's manual recommends....

The owner's manual recommends to fog the engine for storage and not to run the engine during the storage period, if I recall correctly that was listed on page 10-1 of the owner's manual.


I'll just stick to some fuel stabilizer and fogging as well as an oil & filter change in spring.

My sled is stored where I wouldn't have access to start it ocasionally even if I wanted to.
 
Add Seafoam to the gas for your last ride of the season, change the oil, grease the zerks, pull the battery being you don't have access to it. Anything above and beyond that is just more than you need to worry about.
 
Here we go again,

Loosen the track,
Take the belt off,
Change the oil and filter,
drain the gas, run until empty drain the bowls (yamaha uses standard text from their bike storage with metal tanks, better full and stabilized since metal
Remove the air box cover and spray fogging oil in each carb while cranking the starter,
remove the plugs and spray fogging oil in each cylinder replace plags crank starter,
unload front and rear suspension,
cover and store in dry place,

That is all I do too I put sea foam in and filled the tanks to the max start once a month. No problems here thus far.
 
Sea Foam,

Ingedients:

PALE OIL, just a highly refined non-staining or pimented oil, great for anti-corrosion,

Naptha: common incredient in carb cleaner, i.e Gum-out

IPA: Isopropal Alcohol: Soluble with water and found in high % in fuel de-icer...

That's it!

Not bad, the IPA absorbs the water, the Naptha keeps crap from solidifying i.e. parfins and waxes, and the Pale oil keeps metal from corrosion.

I'll try some on my lawn tractor, but will still keep my method for storage.
 
Yeah, dumping in Sea Foam and just running it for 10 minutes once a month sounds like an easy way of doing long-term storage (plus you get to hear that sweet exhaust once a month).

You know I just woke my sled up today and you are right. Actually, I store my sleds in an enclosed trailer and I didn't look at them until three weeks ago. It's kind of cool, I'm putting the bike to sleep and looking forward to riding this winter. It felt good to hear the roar.
 
This was the first year that I didn't run my sled at all over the summer and my carbs were all plugged up. (Yes the gas was stabilized) Next year I'm going back to starting my sled once a month. :drink:
