Hello,

I installed a 136 Expert X on my 03 RX-1 last year and even though I only got a couple rides on it I love it. The only thing I have left to do is studding. Any suggestions on how many/pattern? I have completely updated the front end with Simmons skis, longer links, heaver bar and newer warrior single rate shocks. I'm about 215lbs and ride semi-aggresive. Any advice at all would be great. This is the best forum I have ever visited and is invaluable to say the least.

I just finished up a new track for mine. I went with three per bar up the middle using a $10.00 Woody's template. Total of 162.

This is what I just got back from woody's...

Keith, as long as the new suspension didn’t change any of your clearances the correct length for your 1 ¼ track will be gdp6-1325. as for the number it should be 162. by using the universal template and doing the 192 pattern and skipping every other one on the outside it will give you 162 . if you have any other questions please give me a call at 989-689-4911 and ask for mark

I was under the impresssion studding the outside wasn't the way to go?

Thanks for your reply. I'll figure something out soon.

I called woody's and they had misunderstood what I was running.

After speaking with them I have decided to go with a 162 pattern. They advised me to use a standard template 144 pattern and just continue it for the next 6 bars for the 136 inch track. Sounds good to me and that pattern studs the outside bar. Before I do it is there anyone who thinks this isn't the way to go??

I will never stud the outside row again unless its just a drag sled. I had done my ripsuck the same pattern you are talking about and had two pull throughs in 3000 miles. I just installed a new track with the 3 per bar pattern down the middle.

Here is a pic.

1.325 Woody's with round backers. I even used a Woody's studding template. I had also always studded the outside, but I also never had a 1.25" track with 1.325 studs. I think with tracks down in the 1" range its not as big of a deal due to the shorter stud length. I also think the ripsucks have a much softer rubber compound that most of camoplasts other tracks.

The outer belts are the weakest part of the track. For all out best traction stud the outer belt, for allmost as much traction and way more track durability just stud center of track.I only stud down the center now myself.I run a 2,3 pattern on my 136".The more studs the better traction on soft ice and less studs have more penitration for better traction on hard ice,to an extent anyhow.Stagger your stud pattern around the more scratch lines the better.

i just replaced the track & front heat exchanger due to stud tearing out of outer belt, punching three holes in exchanger before leaving the sled, thankfully it was my last day riding in maine. i will never stud edges again, $800 & alot of labor.

I just did mine. I was going to go with 144 up the center but i decided to do the 96 up the middle and every 4th on the outsides. I went with the 96 up the center because it gives u the option to convert to 144 up the middle if its not enough. Its just a universal template and for the 144 you make one more set of holes and change to double backers rather than singles.

If i dont care for the outsides im taking them out. If i dont think the 96 up the center is enough i'll add more. If its just right i'll leave it :)

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I'm going with Woody's advice and going with the 162 including the outside. I'm not worried about track wear very much and my friend put a stud from the center through his heat exchange. Everything is a give and take and I guess this is no different.

I plan to stud my attak after I get the break in done (or started as not enough snow yet). However I will not stud the outside. I damaged my track on my RX-1 & while doing about 100 mph my temp light came on. Looked down & green fluid all over my boots. A dealer from Quebec was in the area & when he heard what had happened said it was an outside stud as they had had 3 into his shop in the previous week. When I got mine to my dealer it was exactly as described . & a $2700 bill when all was said & done. I trail ride & want safety, not a drag racer myself. Thus either 108 or 162 up the middle. My 2 cents worth.

I will only center stud now. On my RX-1 while doing 100 mph temp light went on & looked down green fluid all over my boot. Outside stud tore out & beat my rad to death. Dealer from Quebec told my 2 buddies I was with, that he had 3 RX-1s show up that week with the exact problem. I'll center stud either 108 or 162 for trail riding & safety.
