I'm just getting back into snowmobiling after 15 years. I have spring ordered my 06 Apex ER. I'm not sure as to studding the track. Should I go 1.38" or 1.5 to get recommended .25" penetration. I',m also concerned with number of studs. I'm thinking 120. however Wood's is recommending over 144 for sleds over 120 HP. Typical trail conditions in my area are hard packed to icy in corners & loose on a straight. I'm more concerned with stopping this bad boy now heading into an icy corner as opposed to hooking up (right now) mid-season I'm sure this will change in priority. Dealer also gave me an option of switching to 1" track. I know the Apex is a lot of sled getting back into the game but my neighbour bought a Rev 800 & he does a lot of yapping. Comments like how do you like my @$$ and crap like that. I will not put up with this BS so I bought the Yamaha. All opinions will be appreciated.

I ran a 1.343 roetin my first year and I ran 1.325 studboy stuff this year.

If I was you I'd let the dealer put the 9830 in it and I'd run 168 down the middle and It would be a roetin hornet with a Studboy power plate backer. You'll tare the Doo a new ahole!!!!

I would run Woody's 1.325 Megabites up the middle, 144 max. Leave that ripsaw on there, best track on the market for all around performance IMHO ;)!

120 will be plenty. Snowtech addressed the issue of how many studs to put in. You can run 96 up the middle and be fine. I would only put studs up the middle and stay away from studding the outside of the track, that is where most tears happen. I have been using woodys gold diggers for years, this year I am going to try the mega bites!

I used mack studs. They wear pretty well, just the tips seem to rust a little. I have had them on an 02 srx for 2 seasons and they didn't bend or break. I also bought them for $1 piece with backers, but that was 2 years ago.

There is no way in hell 120 stud is enough for an agressive drag racer. If you want to win drag races against your buddies and guys out on the lakes you need good tracktion.

I'm a huge drag racer. Traction is the most important part of a drag race. You can have all the HP in the world and if you can't hook it up your not going to win one race.

120 studs is fine for a trail rider that's it.

The next important thing is stud selection. I've used every stud on the market "woodys, Studboy,Roetin, fasttrac, extreem max, saber, and the macks.

By far teh best stud I've ever used is the Roeten Hornet. If the difference is studs in cost is 100.00 bucks don't cheap it by the Roetins!!!!

I'm a trail rider, 120 woody's megabites 1.325 up the middle with the aluminum nuts. Had 144 in the RX and it was to many. Never had a bent or broken stud. I agree with MW, ripsaw is the best track I have ever tried for all around conditions.
