I am new to studding. I found the information on the FAQ about studding regarding the number of studs and the pattern. I have a 07 Apex GT without studs. I have decided to stud the machine with 144 studs. I am 49 years old so I don't ride as crazy as I did when I was younger but would like to stud my machine because we have had such icy conditions in the last few winters. I have attached the pattern for the 144 config. Does this look like a configuration that will work well for my sled? Do I need to install any tunnel protection or does it already exist?
Thanks for your response.

The single double pattern that you have posted looks O.K. It looks as if there will be enough spacing for the shock. You do already have tunnel protectors. You will absolutly love the extra security with studs, my dad is now 60 and until 2 years ago he never belived in studding, he rode my old viper that was studded and decieded I NEED STUDS!! Hopefully this helps a little.

Gimme Snow,
Thanks for the reply and helpful information. Since I am new to studding I wanted to make sure I don't do anything that I will regret.
I am looking forward to having the extra traction when it gets slippery.

My only advice is that I really liked my double backers, mostly because they didnt pull through.
But then one pulled through and it nearly took out my front heat exchanger and cross over tube, as well as my exhaust and exhaust aluminum box. This is because the double backer holds on to the track and spins around with it, taking everything out with it. You can clearly see that spin marks.
Im never using doubles again.

You are going to get as many opions as there are users in this forum. Some say that they will never use anything BUT double backers and others say they don't like the double backers. The end result is that there is always someone who had something happen with either set-up. For me, I use the pattern that you have shown and I have had 6500 trouble free miles. I have never had a stud break, bend, or come out. Just my .02.

i use single backers w/ no issues my self. the main differnce is i stud the out side of the track as well since i like taking corners. 144 is plenty is your looking for extra traction. imo.
