Most of the tear outs happen where all the weight is on the studs, that would be on the outside belts and the center studs nearest the rails. The best traction will come with more studs nearest the rails.

I've run studs on the center and outside rows on all four of the sleds I own and not torn any out.

If you ride hard in and out of corners I wouldn't recommend you stud the outside.

if you install properly you can run in outside row...tall nuts and keep away from edges by at lease 1/2 inch....I never studded in the center belt only til the attak....and now I'm sorry I did...
and I've never lost a stud....but I've installed very very carefully

Dont bother. Unless your a straight line racer all day, there's no sence in going outside. You only rip them out coming hard out of the corners.

Guys, flmcut wants more traction. The only way to get more traction in his case is more studs. Put them on the outside and CRUSH all equal sled with less sutds. The season is so short, load up with studs and win some drags.
I 've been working on my Apex review/mod list. On the second page I've got a brief writeup on studs. Go here to see it.

I have always studded the outside row, I ride like a maniac and have never had a tear out.

I prefer NOT to stud the outside row. I don't want to risk a tear out so I avoid studding the outside row. I like the handling characteristics of studs up the middle... We have 144 on all the Yamaha's in our garage..If I want more traction, I'll add another 48 up the middle.

- None, looking now!
I have ran 196 studs on my old 121. Best advice I can give you is if you do stud the outer belts, stud every belt. his will even the stress along the rest of the studs. I have never had one single stud pull out on me and only had slightly bent a few.
You will find it harder to corner. That's just the way it is. Outer belts for speed and strait line runs. Think about it, you are now widening the studded traction. You won't be able to "spin" the rear end around the corners as well as just studding up the middle unless your on loose snow. Also, when riding hard and that track hooks in the corners, hang on because that sled will want to flip over or track towards the trees in the other side of the trail. Been there.
Here's a pic of what i did......
