Haven't seen an actual production sled yet personally. I'm personally praying for a 2 ply track. If so I'll be using 1.5" studboy PowerPoint or Lake racers depending on price. I'm going to start out with 144 and if I feel I need more traction I'll go to 168. I like my sled to have no chance of spinning so it's putting full power to the ground. Square backers for me..only cuz that's all I've ever used and never had an issue but I make sure I have plenty of studs so it's less stress on the track. This question will get 101 different answers but this is just my opinion on what I'll be using from my past experiences.

I believe in the general Yamaha forum a few weeks ago Chris Reid had a post that stated that it will be a risaw ll 2-ply on both the rtx and ltx with 2.86 pitch and the xtx will be a single ply track with 3.0 pitch. so my plans are to run 135 woodys signature series studs with double backers

If this is true that the track is in fact a 2-ply I will not be a happy camper. At Haydays both Yamaha and Stud Boy said the Viper will have a single ply track so I pulled the trigger with this info....
192 Powerpoint Plus studs with the new SB double backer/nuts will be going on my LTX SE.

With the extra HP from the MPI Turbo kit I think/hope this will be a good number of studs.

I would certainly think the number of studs will be fine for the hp. I was told the same thing about the track but I was also told from my dealer they were 2 ply. I figured it wasn't worth saving a few bucks by buying studs early if they weren't gonna be right. Have never priced out single ply studs. I'm assuming they cost more than regular 2 ply studs?

this is the article I mentioned

I enjoyed the Toronto Snowmobile Show this year. It felt busy and upbeat to me, more-so than in previous years. I spent a couple of hours touring the floor with Masa and Sage Sawai, kicking tires, pointing out products, features and technologies that impact our business. It was interesting to observe their reactions. I noted some things I take for granted were eagerly viewed and others I tried to champion, were met with little exuberance.

We had a small display comprised of three rear suspension rails bolted together side by side. Two rails were off the same (used) skid-frame, the left one had production hy-fax and the right had a Dupont hyfax (impregnated with Vespel inserts). The third rail had a brand new stick of the Dupont in place. The used rails had just over 1100km of southern Ontario scratching on them and the difference between the material wear properties was blatantly obvious. The standard Hyfax showed significant wear ahead of the front idlers, with an uneven undulating pattern towards the rear. The Dupont stick showed almost no wear, remaining straight and flat along its entire length.

It was fun having this tool when trying to explain why someone would want to spend a C-note plus for a stick of plastic and a pleasure to announce it’s inclusion on the production units coming out of our Japan factory. To that point, the Japanese Dupont’s have less Vespel inserts than our accessory parts as they are quite labor intensive to produce.

The question was posed and the answer yes, we have prepared the Duponts with a T-cut specific to the SR Viper skid-frame which is common to many Arctic Cat models and AC will also be making available through their dealers. So-if you have any friends riding green that smell like burning garbage bags in the morning – we have the cure!

It was no dull surprise to read a thread on TY where a lot of Viper owners have received their accessories already. Now all they need is a sled to put them on. Good news is: a steady train of trucks are leaving TRF daily, loaded with Vipers and heading for a dealership near you. I noticed several guys are asking about the tracks on the Vipers. Ripsaw-2 / 2ply on the RTX / LTX and Cobra 1-ply / 3P on XTX SE. There is 9T extroverts on 129 / 137 – 8T extroverts on 141. The drive belt is shorter on SR compared to Apex / Vector (8DN) so you can’t interchange and I wouldn’t suggest you even consider for a spare unless its an emergency. It’ll fit but you’ll be driving around in 3rd gear so to speak…

Another question from the show… ECU calibration. The ECU is the same on Viper as it is in the 7000, horsepower output is identical. How it is put to the ground is another story. One that will be told on the snow. I’ll watch for any more scuttlebutt, ugly rumors or out and out horse-pucky and weigh-in when I can… cheers cr

FYI, you can use single ply studs in a standard ply track with no issues... just not the other way around. ;)!

I do realize that there's a price difference though.. I'm sure a call to Ron and the gang at SB would get that sorted for you though. They are a good group of people.

Yes wot-75 I know that my studs can be used but the fact that Yamaha and SB gave me wrong info really bugs me! The $75 that I thought I saved is no longer since this is about the price difference... I guess in the big picture the money is not a big deal since over $17K has been "invested"!

Again, call them. I'm sure they will work it out and you're probably not the only one who's being affected by this. Be mad at Yamaha though as I'm sure they were the ones passing the bad Intel to Vendors to begin with. The final ply rating could have also changed since then too... Who knows?

My dealer called me at 6:00 PM today to confirm what almond1000 wrote above... The LTX SE has a 2ply track! WTH did Yamaha say the Viper will have a single ply track when I talked with them at Haydays??? Woody's was correct all along!

I don't know if they did or not I wasn't with you :jump:
Maybe you where so mad when you walked away from the woody's booth that you thought that's what they said .....I don't know ......I was reading snow- tech and it said the 141 is a 2 ply too ......

Does anyone know what the longest studs you can run are on this chassis? Curious as I have an LTX SE with the 1.25" track on it and want to stud it

I will be running 1.5" studs they will be fine on this chassis. Not sure if you would want to go with anything longer than that as it would put a lot of stress on the studs and track. If you're concerned about traction the safe bet would be to go with more studs rather than longer studs
