Synthetic oil....old topic, new question

Just want to know what synthetic people are using in turbo sleds? I have an '03 RX1 with an Alpine front mount...I used this past year Amsoil 0W-40, and had no issues,other then used a very little each trip, compared to non turbo, which is understandable. But now, our local "Cambodian Tire" store here in Canada, who I bought from,now wants like $19.00 a liter! That is BS, and there has to be other good oil to use. I like the synthetiic and will stick with it for my own reasons. I do have lot of jugs of Quaker State Q, 5W-30 full synthetic, and was planning on trying this out. Has anyone else used it, and any input?
I don't ride at extreme cold, like -20...so what would be an issue?
I have read of people using Mobil 1 5W30, so why not the new Q? Any positive input appreciated.
 
There is some little known science to oil's that is usefull for this topic.While weeding through the hype,marketing and BS about oils,there are some chemicals that we are looking for in oil that is getting hard to find.First,I believe in using synthetic oil because it pumps better when it's cold.Also,look for ZINC as one of the chemicals used in your oil.The zinc makes a very good cushion for the bearings and(to my knowledge) is only found in off-road oils these days.For me,I use synthetic Valvoline racing oil.
 
Zinc or zddp is being taken out of oils because its suppose to plug cataytic conveters. The epa doesnt like that, but push rod engines are starting to have a higer failure rate in diesel engines. So now have more engines pile up, but the cats are working fine. Good idea epa. I also run 0w40 from amsoil, worked so far for 4 years in my turbo Rx1.
 
Thanks guys, that is the input I am looking for. The topic gets pretty ripped up after awhile, so many opinions, but to have truthful facts is better input then just debating brands and favorites. Like I said, I ran Amsoil, worked ok, but now at $19 a liter? That's crap, and wonder about a substitue of equal quality. The thing is, I have a LOT of the Quaker State Q at my disposal, 5W-30, so was curious if this would work as well? I only noticed an increase in oil consumption, once I installed the turbo, which I can see happening, not a huge amount, just a little, which may be a good thing as well.

just for the heck of it, go to www.ssoiltech.com and order up some of that Amsoil, It will give you a price before you have to put in your card information and it may end up being cheaper for you? It's worth a look! Besides Amsoil was the first in Synthetics and have been at it for 36 years. Synthetics are thier specialty and they take pride in thier product! Guaranteed! No other company puts a guarantee on thier product!
 
Thanks for the link, sleaddheadd..but being it has to come from the US, it's such a pain and shipping hassle for it to get over here, it isn't worth it, maybe save a couple bucks. But a great site, seen it bfore.

I run Yamalube 4S Snowmobile oil, works just fine in both my sleds. There are more to oil consumption than the brand of oil :-)
 
I think anyone knows there is more to consumption then the brand, if not...man have you got problems!
What I was getting at was to what brands and weights people have used in thier sleds, and also in regards to riding temperature ranges.
In my case, I was riding a couple weeks ago, and warm outside temps are also critical as far as performance and oil types.
 
Sorry, I ride mostly in winter, and I've not been into any kind of trouble from running Yamalube 4S in my sleds since 2002/2003 :-) All is well. Anyone also knows that most any 4S sled oil will do just fine, any 4S sled oil will do just fine (waving my hand like a Jedi LOL)

It is not actually consumption, as you said if it is consuming you have HUGE problems! What is actually going on is Oxidation, which is Oxygen getting in there and causing the oil to obtain air bubbles which will eventually lead to the oil, for lack of a better term, dissapearing. Also, when those bubbles form in the oil you are not achieving the proper protection you may need, so if you are experiencing oil consumption try a different brand as they may not be protecting you the way you need to be protected. There is an addative that some companies use in thier synthetic mixture that will eliminate oxidation or at least slow it down.
As far as the warmer temps. go you should be fine with a good 40 wieght oil.
Glad to hear you were still riding a couple weeks ago! that is awesome, Bud! Have a great summer! or what little summer you may have up there! lol....
