Hey guys,
While riding Friday night I had my temp light come on. We pulled off the trail and let the machine sit in deep snow to cool for 20 min. My friend is an auto mechanic for 30 years and swore the machine was not overheating. I know the set point will be lower then an actual overheat condition. Anyways we went an other 7-8 miles and the light was intermittent but still there. The heat exchangers were warm not hot. I then rode home about 40 miles with no issues. The next morning I rode around my yard and the light was a bit goofy at start up during the warm up flashing, I believe there must be something up with the sensor. Has any of you guys seen this in the past and what should I do? I am thinking of replacing the sensor. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!Thanks

It is supposed to blink until its warm enough according to the sensor to go riding. Check your fluid level and add some water wetter product in your coolant.

The condition I seen Friday night came after about 40miles of riding and I do let it go through the warm up sequence before taking off. Yesterday while it was cold the temp light flashed like it should for warm up but while flashing never completely turned off between blips and then it did completely turn off at the end of the warm up... does that make sense? And acted fine for the few laps around the yard. Could it be possible I did get it to a temp Friday night that tripped the light and it never did cool enough to disable the light and never get hot enough to do damage? After the light was on it would get dim and shut off from time to time but just for a few seconds

I JUST LOOKED THRU THE MANUAL I WOULD START BY CHECKING THE THERMOSTAT IF IT STICKS THIS COULD CAUSE THE COOLANT TEMP TO RISE DUE TO A LACK OF CIRCULATION. IF SO THE TEMP SENSOR MAY HAVE BEEN ACTIVATED. IT LOOKS LIKE THE TEMP SENSOR IS NOT MECHANICAL MEANING IT ONLY SENSES THE TEMP OF THE COOLANT SO I DO BELIVE THAT THE COOLANT WOULD HAVE HAD TO GET HOT TO ACTIVATE THE LIGHT. THE MANUAL SHOWS A PROCEDURE TO TEST THERMOSAT BY REMOVING IT AND PUTTING IT IN HOT WATER THE TEST IT? I SUPPOSE THE TEMP SENSOR COULD GO BAD BUT I WOULD LEAN TWARDS THE THERMOSTAT FIST. JDP

If you were riding in half descent snow and your cooling system is up to snuff no it would not come on. Did you check your coolant level?

I'm thinking stuck thermostat also... The fact the exchangers were only warm... If you touch my right side one up front, it is HOT! As in don't hold your hand there very long. Further back will be cooler, left side even cooler yet.
I agree. If your exchangers are only warm and not hot, you shouldn't be overheating. If you pull the thermostat just replace it. You can test the old one if you like, but since you'll have it apart you might as well install a new one.
If you still have an intermittent light i would then replace the sensor......
I know on my sled it won't let me move it until the warm up cycle is finished....

Low coolant could cause same symptoms. I'd check that then replace thermostat.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I did check coolant level and it was Ok. I was feeling the left side heat exchanger that was warm so that makes sense since it its later in the cooling path. I rode the sled 145 miles yesterday with no issues what so ever without changing a thing, I think I am going to throw a thermostat at it anyway just for good measure. Who knows yesterday it could have been stuck open! Thanks for the feedback fellas its awesome to get help from experience!

I would install a temp gauge as well. Easy to install and you get a direct temp reading, so you can see if she's getting hot well before the dash light comes on.
