Think I blew the motor today !

motor

Too late parting out the sled as we speak. With the mpi ecu refalsh I was running safely at that boost level. But I got a bit of bad fuel and that was it. It ran trouble free for 2000m no problems. I would add octane booster if i was ever to do it again. Enjoy you Viper

MCX 270 Kit, have over 3000 miles on it. Always just 92 pump Non-Ethanol.......... no problems on this end. Always above 6000 feet though.....

6000 feet makes a huge difference

10.9 to 11.4 is the tartget on the AFR I am running. I am riding with 2 gallons of 110 race gas and always blend with 91 pump gas but they told me that I don't have too, I don't believe them anymore.!

Yamadog, I am with you on this 100 percent..... Better to be safe than ride the ragged edge of octane requirements. Pump gas alone is playing with fire with any boost ... Too many variables that can't be measured at the pump....better to leave a little on the table for the
Life of the engine.... I have 6000 miles on my turbo and I run it like I stole it every time I ride.... The octane safety net has payed off for me over the last 8 years.... I run from 6lbs to 14 lbs depending on conditions ( no head shim, all stock) mostly trail riding so it's no trailer queen.... Outside of some jetting issues it's been fantastic. 118 race gas and 93 octane shell
-no ethanol 50 /50 ... Not cheap but worth the insurance.... Plus I always have a can of klotz
Octane boost as back up in case of a re fill on the trail. - premium pump 93 is available every where in my ride circles.

The other problem I see is-

Most of the pumps have 1 hose and 3 levels of octane come out of them. The regulator is the handle and I don't believe the hose is evacuated between uses. So the fuel from the handle back to the octane type regulator is what ever was pumped last. So you may be getting almost a gallon of 87 if that was what was pumped before you.

Anyone with a gas station backround let us know on this!!!

@Yamadog yes you are correct. I ALWAYS pump 5 gallons of the high test into my truck before filling my sled or my boat with 92 Non-Ethanol if it comes from a pump like that. I figure 5 gallons is enough to get it through and back up to the MIN Octane Rating.

@ghost rider when I hear "mostly trail riding so it's no trailer queen...." most of us mountain guys are chuckling!

Us mountain guys aren't often re-fueling at a pump, we almost always are carrying fuel or fueling on a trailer. Less fuel issues for me, since I always buy my fuel from the same pump every ride.

I forgot about the mountain guys seeing as in ontario it's pretty flat
My scope was short sighted.....
On the trails when you need to fill up it can be dodgy at some no name stations

Finally got around to taking the motor apart. Turns out all that happened was I cracked the center piston. It'is a very fine crack straight across not quite reaching the edges. The head and bores including the center cylinder are in perfect condition. I got very lucky as I was just turning around when it started to missfire. Had I been under load it probably would have broken apart. New piston and rings all across and you're good to go. Anyone looking for a good clean core/motor let me know.

I just added an MPI supercharger with 28/28 pulleys which is intended for high elevation. I will be riding in low elevation so I talked to MPI about it. Their suggestion was to do the reflash which will retard the timing and allow me to ride the 8 lbs in low elevation safely. After reading this post it sounds like the reflash is ok as long as the octane in the tank is 92 or higher. Is this accurate? the safe thing to do is add a can of Torco to each fill? MPI was pretty confident the reflash would be a safe solution.

Sounds like good insurance to me. Still unsure how or why the piston cracked in the first place. Good luck with your project !
