When you take the headlight pod off, take the whole bracket off that the pod is attached to. Instead of just the pod. You will have 4 bolts and the 2 screws at the rear. You then have straight access to the air box boot screws with the bracket out of the way. Also no more tabs to line up on the bottom of the pod. It all stays attached to the bracket.

I don't see what the big deal is with removing the pod and
air box . Its so easy can be done is less than 5 min taking
your time. Make sure you have the long allen tool for the
air box rubber boot clamps that all. The pod almost falls into
place and then slide it back to hook tabs and your 10mm bolts
got to line up. Had mine of 2 or 3 times this past week.

I've done it both ways. It's just alot easier to get at the carb boot screws when the pod is removed with the bracket. The allen wrench is at an angle on some of the screws with the bracket on.

Excellent! tried it today and it worked perfectly!

CORRECT TOOLS ARE THE ANSWER,IF YOU WANT TO MAKE QUICK WORK OF THE AIRBOX REMOVAL. 4 MM X 6" LONG BALL END ALLEN WRENCH. DID A ENGINE TO JACKSHAFT ALIGNMENT, IN UNDER 1/2 HR. YES IT WAS OFF.!!! ENGINE HAD TO BE MOVED FORWARD. NEED TO REMOVE THE BOX, TO ACCESS 2 FRONT 17MM. BOLTS.!!
