First Post to the forum....need help. Was out riding last night 03 RX-1 was running great until I flipped it. Low speed tip over to the right side on the lake. I noticed a small rattling sound after this and was progressively losing power. Had no choice but to keep going in limp mode to get home. Then I lost all power, had to get help to tow in. Changed plugs, starts fine but runs really really rough maybe 1 or 2 jugs only. Also noticed small amont of oil on the floor next morning. Did not notice oil light. Hope I didn't pooch the motor. Any ideas\help??

Did it run while it was on its side? If so, for how long?

That doesn't sound good.
If it was running that long while sitting on the right side, the oil pump may have sucked in some air, then when riding it, since there was air in the oil pump, it could be that there was no oil circulating, which means that as it progressively lost power, it was progressively grinding its guts to bits.
The very next thing you do is this;
Note: if at any stage you find something wrong, do not continue testing as any further rotating of the engine could cause more damage. Drain oil from both engine and tank (into separate containers if possible), remove and cut open oil filter -- use shears/tinsnips to open oil filter and not grinder/drill -- you dont want to be adding metal chips since you will be looking for them. Inspect oil and oil filter for metallic particles, it may be a good idea to bring oil in for professional analysis. If oil checks out, you are probably ok, but continue just for fun; Replace filter and fill oil, pull plugs out and rotate by hand. Check that there are no grinding/sticking spots. Check compression. If all seems well at this point, that is a good thing because it means that there must be some other reason why it isn't running right.
If something is funny at this point, then complete engine disassembly/inspection/repair is necessary.
I'm thinking that the rattling sound may have been a conrod bearing. I hope I'm wrong.

I suspect the same thing. I hope we are both wrong. I will be doing all of the above and get back and\or request feedback as I know more.

Finally got to the task at hand. We have found that there is no compression in the far left side (cyl #1). Any ideas, piston, bearing, valve or all of the above??????.

Sounds like a tear down to me in order to find out.chaznikk said:Finally got to the task at hand. We have found that there is no compression in the far left side (cyl #1). Any ideas, piston, bearing, valve or all of the above??????.

BAD..BAD..BAD. 1"x2" hole in the crankcase. Looks like the conrod broke and\or stretched the bolt and went through the case. No idea waht other damage has been done. Don't know if I should bother stripping it down and doing a rebuild or try to find a good used motor. Really sucks, had a week trip planned next week. Now what any ideas on repairs\used motor.

What may have happened is the connecting rod bearing on the rod that broke "spun" out of place while the sled was running while on its side. It "spun" because the engine was running without oil pressure. When you flipped it back to right side up and drove it home, the "spun" bearing seized to the crankshaft journal which resulted in the broken connecting rod. You will probably need a new crankshaft, connecting rod, 8 new connecting rod bolts (they cannot be reused), new piston, and ring set, all the gaskets and ALL new bearings. You might be able to salvage the crankcase by having it welded up as long as the cylinder was not damaged. You might as well up date all the rings with the 05 ring set. Overall, probably $1200+ in parts IF the crankcase/cylinder block can be salvaged. I know this is not the news you wanted to hear. Contact LANEO on this site, he "parts-out" many sleds and has advertised complete engines.

Crankshaft can be repaired as long as it isn't bent. Hell, even if it is bent, it may still be possible to fix it. Here's a place that will fix the crankshaft: http://www.yellowpages.ca/bus/Ontario/N ... onto%2C+ON
Cylinder can be bored, sleeved, and re-plated, crankcase welded. Rip it apart, it may not be all that expensive to repair. For sure rings (if its apart, you might as well), gaskets, bearings, conrod, conrod bolts. There is a possibility that the piston may have survived. There is also a possibility that the head may be damaged. You won't know until you rip it all apart, but it is definitely worth ripping it apart.
