Sure you will lose top speed by dropping two teeth, but the efficency of the drive train is decreased with with too much of a bend in the chain and puts a lot of stress on which which will make the chain wear out faster. So, the bottom line is this... Get a chain as well to match the gearing.

the purpose in gearing down is to change the gear ratio...not waste energy (efficiency is how well something works or lack thereof)...
an example of this is the motor makes 134 h.p. thereabouts but only approx 75 makes it to the track...the balance is loss of energy ..through driveline inefficiency, parasitic losses and friction.
the more ways one can prevent these losses and in some cases create gains ( like some clutching improvements for example) a properly tensioned and aligned track etc etc the more power gets to where its supposed to go...
theres more than one way to change the ratio...the top gear or the bottom ...changing the big gear will keep the efficiency and lower the ratio ...
making the chain take a tighter radius is wasted energy (poor efficiency) and therefore a loss in power...even though you have accomplished the lower gear ratio desired...

I am running 20/40 on a slightly longer RTX SE.
Would never consider a higher gearing than this.
Also not a big fan of the tight radius of gears smaller than 20...

Alatalo what kind of top speed did you got with your set-up? I will run a Back Country with a 20 teeth this winter.

Ok. Thanks. But 19/39 shoud be almost the same ratio as 20/40 so it shouldt be that bad? Or am i wrong again?
19/39 - 2.05
20/40 - 2.00
Thanks

Thanks

Never checked as I have got zero interest in top speed. I am using this sled only for freeriding and rough trail riding. I doubt that anything more "stockish" than a 2:1 ratio would pull the 136"x1.75" in deep powder. At least not in an efficient way at a reasonable clutch temperature...1049triple said:Alatalo what kind of top speed did you got with your set-up?
