Well just shreaded a track on my low mile RX 1 (3k) that I just bought and was over studded. Was hoping to get thru the season but it did not happen. Have a rip saw on my son's sled, very happy with that. Do I get another, or do I try the holeshot? Going to only use 96 studs down the middle. Do I spend the extra $ for a Ice ripper. Thanks for the replies!

If you are just looking for a good track for the trail and want the safety of studs without having to worry about studs ripping out the ice ripper xt is the way to go. I have one on my Rx-1 and the wifes Phazer and we are quite happy with them. If your into drags or a real aggresive rider the ice ripper won't be enough for you.

Get a Predator (now called Carve). FAR superior to any of those ripjunk/icejunk/hackjunk/etc. Even the 1" will outperform all the other choices I've listed.
Ive been very happy with the Kimnpex shotgun - it is pre molded for 96 down the middle. I now have over 6000 miles on it and there isn't a tear or a mark and not a stud has pulled through. I was running a stroked 1100 cc Apex motor with over 190 hp for the last 3860 miles until it threw a rod 3 wks ago.
This track out launches the rip saw and I have ridden out west in deeper snow than I thought possible for a 121 and only stuck it once.
Oh yea and the shotgun is about $100 less than the ripsaw.

Might want to look into a Cobra, it's a similar pattern to the ripsaw but it's got a slightly taller lug and is more made for off-trail, wheras the ripsaw was designed for crossover type machines. Though I've been perfectly happy with the stock ripsaw. The first one failed at like 2400 miles, but that was because the p/o way over-studded it. This one has over 1000 miles and it's still good as new.
I've heard good things about the shotgun, on of my buddies has one of those on an old Vmax and it does surprisingly well in the powder.
The ice-ripper track is a good compromise if you ride hard or on not always nice groomed trails, it helps when you hit those icy corners a little too hot.
Instead of studding, I'd find a track with the biggest lug that will fit. You need a good .5" extra clearance to stud, and extra lug will help you more than studs ever will. IMO studs are a waste, the problems and cost way outshine the benefits. Spend the money you would have wasted on studs to get a taller track, you'll be a lot happier.

I am leaning towards the shotgun and adding the 96 studs. Shade tree has one for 366.00 which is a fair price. Does anyone know how long of a stud I can use with out worring about stud damage to the sled? The old track (oe predator) has like 200 suds, the p/o screwed up the track big time. I did not measure the studs but they look to be 1.5 long and bent and broke and pulled thru all over the old track. I was lucky when the track came apart at 90 mph the backside was flapping around under the sled. If it would have failed the other way the studs would have done some serious damage. The yamaha gods were watching over me.

Previous owner probably didnt put large backers on the studs. I have 240 - 1.1875 in my Rx no problems over 4000 miles.

I agree 100% I put a preditor on every sled I buy, even if the track is fine. Maxdlx

1.375 is what you want it gives good bite any longer and they will bend and pull through too easy. I have a ton of miles on mine and never one stud issue and this year I was pushing over 190 hp and added 3860 miles before kaboom.

I have 6400 miles on my Ice Ripper. It will NOT go another year. Had to do some clipping and a couple lugs have been thrown. However, I am going to get another one, next year. Apparently, you can't get one right now! They are all sold out, except for the few dingbats that think they are going to sell them for over $800.00.

Found a great deal on shotgun, $255.00 w/96 pre molded holes and shotgun x, $265.00 w/144 pre molded holes. What do you think? If I get the x, would 96 studs work or do you think it will stress the track since it was made for 144? shiping is less then $20.00

Well I did it, bought a NEW shotgun x with 144 pre molded holes for 265.00 from e-bay, he had 5 tracks left and is located here in Roscommon Michigan will see how it looks when it arrives in a few days. Seems like the best deal out there, hopefully all goes well.
